Good evening, today is Tuesday, November 15th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
If Thanksgiving is next week, that means Artwalk, the longest-running arts festival in west Texas, is this week, Friday and Saturday in downtown Alpine.
Now in its twenty-ninth year, Artwalk will highlight the works of many west Texas artists and celebrate their projects along with several local businesses.
Featured Artwalk artist this year is E. Dan Klepper of Marathon, who creates large-scale mixed-media presentations that capture what he calls the “wild untamed landscape of rural Texas.”
New Executive Director Ty Muennink said they chose Klepper because his works not only reflect the Big Bend area, but it’s where Artwalk began.
Artwalk started as a small grassroots organization in 1994 with a handful of artists and gallery owners, including Artwalk Founder and longtime C.E.O. Kerri Blackman.
Blackman has relinquished the executive director title but remains active in the organization, first known as Gallery Night.
The event grew in size and in popularity over the years and now is one of the city’s top attractions, bringing visitors from far and wide.
Blackman called it “an exciting time.” It is one of the top events on the Alpine calendar, drawing art aficionados from far and wide.
The public is invited to the Sul Ross State University tree lighting ceremony and winter carnival next Tuesday.
There will be another Sul Ross tree lighting on December 3 with the Alpine Historical Alliance’s Christmas Stroll.
Beginning at 5:30 Tuesday evening, all are welcome to take photographs in front of the 25-foot tree at Lawrence Hall, which is located at Entrance 2 on Highway 67.
Interim President Dr. Carlos Hernandez will flip the switch and turn the lights on with help from friends at 6 p.m.
All are invited to sing Christmas carols, led by students and athletes, as they walk from Lawrence Hall to the Morgan University Center.
Once there, refreshments and entertainment will be provided by the Sul Ross Concert Band, directed by Dr. Andrew Alegria.
Mariachi Santa Cruz and the Sul Ross Pep Band, directed by Chuck Wilson, also will perform.
First Lady Lupita Hernandez will read ’Twas the Night Before Christmas for the children in attendance, after which Santa Claus is scheduled for an appearance at about 7.
Throughout the evening, student organizations will host a winter carnival on the second floor of the University Center with booths for goods and crafts. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served.

And with Thanksgiving next week, Fort Davis and Alpine are hosting events to commemorate the holiday.
On Thanksgiving Eve, the Parker Family will welcome the public to a Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Spicewood Restaurant from 4 to 6 p.m.
No reservations are necessary to attend the dinner, which also has free admission while supplies last. Spicewood will be closed Thanksgiving Day.
Fort Davis will host its Hometown Fair with harvests, crafts, food and fun the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Both days will be at the Jeff Davis County Community Center from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 4 Saturday.

The Alpine Ambassadors have announced a ribbon cutting at the Magical warehouse at 2 p.m. Saturday at 113 East Holland Avenue between the Rangra Theater and the Jewelry Store.
They offer toys and games and had a Halloween Ghost House at the Rangra theater last month.

Artwalk, el festival de arte de mayor duración en el oeste de Texas, es esta semana el viernes y sábado en el centro de Alpine.
Ahora en su vigésimo noveno año, Artwalk destacará las obras de muchos artistas del oeste de Texas y celebrará sus proyectos junto con varias empresas locales.
El artista destacado de Artwalk este año es E. Dan Klepper de Marathon, quien crea presentaciones de medios mixtos a gran escala que capturan lo que él llama el “paisaje salvaje e indómito de las zonas rurales de Texas”.
