Hello, I’m Z and this is the local and area news.
We just finished one election this week and now face another.
Next year’s Presidential Election starts for Texans with the March 5 Primary in which the political parties select nominations for the November General Election next year.
Filing deadline for that primary starts tomorrow and runs through December 11.
And it’s not just for the Presidential candidates. In Texas, we are choosing a U.S. Senator for the seat now held by Ted Cruz, who has said he is running for re-election.
He has said he has an opponent but we have not heard who that candidate might be.
No other races or candidates have surfaced so far but we’ll know more in a month when we will be able to see who has filed.
Also on the ballot will be every Congressional office in the country because they have to run every two years.
Other offices and issues will be on the ballot and we’ll know more as things develop.
Four faculty members at Sul Ross State University have been selected for awards for outstanding scholarship, service and commitment for the 2023 term.
The awards are coordinated by the Office of the Provost while recipients are nominated by their faculty peers or the university administration.
Dr. Bryon Schroeder, the Director of the Center for Big Bend Studies, was chosen by his peers for the Outstanding Scholar Award for 2023.
Dr. Robert Kinucan (kih-NOO-kan), a professor in the Department of Natural Resource Management, is the recipient of the Presidential Award.
Dr. Christopher Ritzi and Dr. Ryan Luna each received an equal number of votes for the inaugural Faculty Service Award.
The next training class offered by the Sul Ross Small Business Development Center will be from 1 to 2 Monday.
It will be on the topic, “She Means Business: Mastering the Art of Networking.

A ribbon-cutting for Mendias and Company hair salon has been scheduled for 6:30 Saturday at the salon at 213 West Holland Avenue.
The social event starts at 6 with the ribbon cutting at 6:30 celebrating the salon’s tenth anniversary.
Clara Mendias, a native of Marfa and longtime Alpine resident, started the hair salon just west of the Holland Hotel in 2013.
They offer a range of services from men’s, women’s and children’s haircuts, coloring and massages and have done numerous weddings.
They are open Wednesday through Friday from 10 to 6.

Buenas tardes, hoy es Viernes 10 de Noviembre, mi nombre es Alexandra Tackett y éstas son sus noticias en español.
Acabamos de terminar una elección esta semana y ahora nos enfrentamos a otra.
Las elecciones presidenciales del próximo año comienzan para los tejanos con las primarias del 5 de marzo, en las que los partidos políticos seleccionan nominaciones para las elecciones generales de noviembre del próximo año.
La fecha límite de presentación para esas primarias comienza mañana y se extiende hasta el 11 de diciembre.
Y no es sólo para los candidatos presidenciales. En Texas, estamos eligiendo un senador estadounidense para el puesto que ahora ocupa Ted Cruz, quien ha dicho que se postula para la reelección.
Ha dicho que tiene un oponente, pero no hemos oído quién podría ser ese candidato.
Hasta ahora no han surgido otras contiendas o candidatos, pero sabremos más en un mes cuando podremos ver quién se ha presentado.
También en la boleta estarán todos los cargos del Congreso del país porque deben postularse cada dos años.
Otros cargos y temas estarán en la boleta electoral y sabremos más a medida que se desarrollen las cosas.
Cuatro miembros del cuerpo docente de la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross han sido seleccionados para recibir premios por su destacada erudición, servicio y compromiso para el período 2023.
Los premios son coordinados por la Oficina del Rector, mientras que los ganadores son nominados por sus compañeros de la facultad o la administración de la universidad.

El evento social comienza a las 6 con el corte de listón a las 6:30 celebrando el décimo aniversario del salón.
