Transcript:

Our Congressman Tony Gonzales made national news last week with a letter to President Biden
and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

He expressed concern over a report to him that more than half a million illegal immigrants on the
docket have a criminal history.
More than 13 thousand of them have been charged with murder and nearly 16 thousand have
been charged with rape or criminal assault.
On Thursday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deputy Director Patrick Lechleiter
responded to Gonzales that as of July, more than 662 thousand have a criminal history.
Gonzales said we’ve known for far too long that the Biden-Harris border crisis poses a direct
threat to Americans.
He said it’s time for Washington to move past rhetoric and toward results. Americans deserve to
feel safe in their communities, he said.

The Alpine City Council in its regular monthly meeting tomorrow could be in for a long session
with a six-page agenda containing 16 items, many with several sections.

Six of the items are public hearings on changes to the animal ordinance, a minor replat and two
short-term rentals.
Another would allow Perla Baeza to obtain a permit to sell malt beverages in a beer garden in the
former Farmers Market at 107 East Murphy.
Another deals with solid waste including scrap tires and would include a fine of up to 4 thousand
dollars for violations.
Among five items on the consent agenda is one to hire long-time auditor Gibson, Ruddock,
Patterson for an outside audit for fiscal year 2023-24.
That audit was delayed blamed on staffing changes at city hall.
Action items include the second and final readings of the animal ordinance and solid waste
amendments and first reading of the sale of a small strip of land on West Brown Street.
Others include the small replat, participation in a solid-waste grant program, a truck lease and
naming the Alpine Avalanche as the official newspaper for the city.
Finally, another action item would permit the installation of speed bumps on a small section of
Avenue B.

Councilor Rick Stephens has complained that stop signs and a 20-mile-per-hour speed limit have
not been effective.

The council meets at 5:30 tomorrow at City Hall at 803 West Holland Avenue.

And a reminder. City Hall will be (is) closed today so staff can prepare financials for the new
fiscal year which begins tomorrow.

Staff will be available for phone queries the all offices will be closed.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals will sit for oral argument tomorrow while visiting the
Alpine campus of Sul Ross State University.

The arguments are open to the public, as are several panel discussions and presentations that will
accompany the visit from today through Wednesday.
The Court will be joined by the State Bar Criminal Justice Section Council and a delegation of
Mongolian judges.
They will observe the programs and close the event with a talk about building a democratic
judiciary.
The Court of Criminal Appeals is Texas’ highest court for criminal cases.
