Brewster County Commissioners will be asked to approve three items relating to the November 5
General Election tomorrow, including the formal announcement of the election.

The actions will come at the Court’s regular bi-monthly meeting.
They also will be asked to approve a contract with the Marathon Public School district for its
School Board election.
And another contract with the City of Alpine would set up its election on proposed amendments
to the City Charter.
City Elections in Texas normally are in May but the vote on the charter amendments was
required to be in the November General Election.
We’ll have more on the amendments as the election nears.
In a generally-routine meeting, Commissioners also will be asked to approve an agreement
allowing the Sheriff’s office to provide school resource officers to the Alpine I.S.D.
Other agreements would provide for tax collections, the county grant program for next year and
purchase of an S.U.V. for the County Tourism Office.
Commissioners meet at 9:30 tomorrow in the Commissioners’ Courtroom in the Brewster Count
Courthouse.

Did you notice? The Autumnal Equinox arrived yesterday morning.
There was nothing you could really see and it occurred about the time you aroused from your
night’s sleep at 6:44 a.m.
But it is here. Summer is over and it’s now autumn, or fall.
The seasons occur four times per years depending on where the Earth is in its rotation around the
Sun.
The Earth doesn’t really “wobble” on its axis, as some say. The axis is tilted so in the summer,
the northern hemisphere is closest to the sun and in our winter, the southern half is.
The two equinoxes occur when the equator is closest to the sun so it shines equally in the two
hemispheres. Enjoy the cooler weather.

Our congressman Tony Gonzales said last week that the House of Representatives had passed the
bipartisan Find and Protect Foster Youth Act.

Approval sent the measure to the President for his signature.
This legislation seeks to create an improved feedback mechanism between states and the
Administration of Children and Families Act.
That would provide better oversight and information-sharing related to missing and runaway
foster youth.
Gonzales said far too many foster children have gone missing in Texas and across the nation.
The new law will improve communication between state and federal agencies to help find
missing foster children.
It also will strengthen reporting standards and investigate if missing foster youth were victims of
abuse, sex trafficking and other harms.

Marathon Public Library has been named one of 45 Texas libraries to receive a 2024 Texas Book

across Texas.
