Monday, October 5 Morning News

In El Paso on Friday, a federal judge issued a temporary injunction halting the construction of all border barriers and security infrastructure in the Big Bend.

In a legal filing outlining the ruling, federal judge Kathleen Cardone wrote that the injunction takes effect immediately and that the federal government shall not QUOTE “build border barrier or related infrastructure, or engage in any construction or ground disturbing activities.”

According to the outlet Inside Climate News, the lawsuit takes aim at the federal government’s waiving of federal laws to fast-track barrier construction by stating the Big Bend is an area of “high illegal entry.” Attorneys argued the plaintiffs are suffering and will continue to suffer harm if border wall construction continues.

The plaintiffs include the Center for Biological Diversity, a local nonprofit and a riverguide in Terlingua.

Customs and Border Protection told Marfa Public Radio that the agency stands by their assessment and remains QUOTE “confident in our legal authorities to secure the border while preserving the unique landscape of the Big Bend region.”

A reminder: the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects – funded by a grant from AARP – is holding a contest to design backyard cottages for the town’s older populations.

According to the group, these kinds of buildings are also known as ADUs, or accessory dwelling units. And the nonprofit sees them as one part of the solution to having enough appropriate housing for elders, close to friends and family.

You can find the application to submit your design at alpinecommunityprojects.org.
