This afternoon (MONDAY), the college of education at Sul Ross presents a lecture with Ashlie Crosson, the 2025 national teacher of the year.

The event is part of the Poindexter Lecture Series and will be Monday, October 20 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Espino Center.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), Brewster County officials will hold a special county commissioners meeting.

According to an agenda for the Oct. 21 meeting, commissioners are set to consider a contract for nearly $38,000 for the construction of a shade cover for the county’s road and bridge yard in Terlingua. They’ll also hear a presentation from a company over the process of collecting delinquent property taxes in Brewster County.

That special commissioners meeting starts Tuesday morning at 9:30 and will be at the county courthouse in Alpine.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY) there will also be a city workshop and regular city council meeting, beginning at 4:00 p.m.

The workshop includes a planning session to discuss upcoming wastewater projects in the city, financial planning, along with a presentation from an engineering firm.

During the city council meeting, council members will discuss the possibility of dissolving the city’s parks and recreation board and they’ll also talk about the city pool, recent leaks, and a plan to improve the pool ahead of the next swimming season.

At the end of the week, Sul Ross’ theatre department kicks off its next production, the dark comedy “True West.”

The story, set in California’s San Gabriel Valley, explores the tense relationship between two brothers working toward the American Dream. 

The production opens Friday, Oct. 24, and runs through Nov. 9 with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. 

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors 65 and older. U.S. veterans and university students, faculty and staff receive free admission. 

“True West” contains strong language and depictions of physical violence and is not recommended for children under 12.

In the coming week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross will host training sessions for business owners. 

The first one will cover budgeting and how to tackle it. In this one-hour webinar, you’ll learn the value of budgeting and why it’s a crucial tool for financial success. That training takes place Friday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The next training will tell you everything you need to know to get your business on Google Search and Maps. In this workshop, you will learn how to create and manage a Google Business Profile from start to finish. The training will be Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
