The new director of the Museum of the Big Bend, replacing Mary Bones who retired earlier this
year, has started work in his new job.
Dr. John Klingemann has returned to Alpine as the new Director of the Museum and also carry
the titles as assistant vice president of Advancement and professor in the Department of History.
Museum curator Matt Walter also recently retired.
A Brewster County native, Dr. Klingemann is a graduate of Alpine High School and received his
bachelor’s degree in Spanish and master’s degree in history from Sul Ross State University.
He worked with the Center for Big Bend Studies and as the Curator of Public Programs and
Exhibits at the museum.
He later pursued his doctoral degree in Latin American History at the University of Arizona,
later receiving a Fulbright Fellowship for research in Mexico.
He returned as a professor of Latin American History at Angelo State University in 2007 and
was promoted to Chair of the History Department in 2014.
Sul Ross President Carlos Hernandez said Dr. Klingemann has an impressive resume but his
connection to Sul Ross and the Big Bend area was a factor in his choice to come home.

The Sul Ross Small Business Development Center will have an online training session Thursday
and it will be conducted in Spanish.
This is the Texas Cottage Food Law training it offered in October. Selling home-cooked meals
will be from 10 to 11 Thursday.
Selling of home-cooked meals have been subject to many regulations but certain types of foods
can be prepared at home under the new “Cottage Foods” laws.
The instructor will be Andrea Beleno Harrington, a lawyer with Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid.
The no-cost confidential business advice will be to people who want to start a business or already
are in business and need other advice.

A large crowd and several sound trucks gathered around the Oyo Motel at Holland and Walker
Streets for a good share of the day Friday,
Executive Producer Wes Edwards told us they were filming a music video for country and
western singer Chris Stapleton.
The story line was based around chasing a bank robber but Stapleton’s only appearance in the
film will be driving a truck.
The video will be called “White Horse” but no horse was seen at the shooting.
Maria Granado Dutchover will present a History talk Tuesday about the historic Granado Family
who settled in Jeff Davis County in the 1860s.
She will discuss a large branch of this family who impacted so many in our area.
Maria’s talk will be at 6 Tuesday at the Overland Trail Museum at 511 Fort Street beneath the
Sleeping Lion Mountain. The talk is free to the public.
