Monday, May 5th Morning News

Transcript:

Results are in from the May 3 municipal elections across the region.

And in the ONLY competitive race in Alpine – to represent Ward 1 on the City Council – Richard Portillo received an overwhelming amount of the votes, guaranteeing a spot on the council.

Municipal elections in Marfa were cancelled – but the ballot in Presidio was packed. In the race for school board, Jeremy Velasquez, Maria Loyola Montoya, and Iris S. Galindo were the top 3 vote-getters and will be elected. In other school matters, Presidio narrowly voted down a nearly $10 million school bond that would’ve gone toward updating school facilities and buying new school buses.

In the race for two full-term city council seats, Silverio Escontrias and Bianca Martinez-Bailon were the top vote getters. And for the unexpired term on the council, Juan Saenz edged out his opponent Alondra Flores.

The Alpine City Council will have its regular city council meeting tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at the city council chambers, located at 803 W. Holland Avenue.

You can find an agenda for the meeting at cityofalpine.com

Mammogram services return to the Big Bend region this week.

Late last year, the future of those services was put in limbo when the only provider in the region shut down. Now, a new company will provide mammogram services beginning tomorrow, May 6, at the Presidio Activity Center. The next day, May 7, the services will be offered in Terlingua. And from May 8th to the 9th, mammogram screenings will be held at Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine.
