Raymond Glen Decker died Wednesday, May 14 at his home in Alpine, Texas.  He was 75. 

Born in Dallas, R.G. spent most of his young life in the Odessa and Midland area attending Midland High School. He spent over 4 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He met the love of his life in 1971, Laura Martin, they wed and enjoyed 54 beautiful years of marriage and raised four wonderful children. 

Upon retiring to Alpine, Texas, the two enjoyed going to garage sales every Saturday where R.G. was an enthusiastic conversationalist. He reluctantly traveled and enjoyed every bit of it. He enjoyed entertaining grandchildren and created his own personal oasis with ponds, trees and plants.

R. G. is survived by his loving wife, two sisters, one brother, four children; his twelve grandchildren, and his two great grandchildren.

His life will be celebrated on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. The gathering will begin at 10 a.m., followed immediately by graveside services at Hill Crest Cemetery in Fort Davis.


Sul Ross State University has been nationally recognized with two prestigious designations that recognize the school as both an institution that’s accessible for underserved communities and as a place for quality research. 

According to the university, Sul Ross is the smallest university in the U.S. to earn both Research College and University and Opportunity College and University — a distinction achieved by only 33 institutions across the country. 


The Alpine ISD school board of trustees meet later this week, and as part of their meeting, they’re set to welcome and officially administer the oath of office to newly elected board members. 

The board meets Tuesday, May 20 at the school’s administrative building, located at 704 W. Sul Ross Ave at 5:30  p.m.

The Alpine City Council also meets on Tuesday. And – among other agenda items – they’ll consider and approve of renaming several streets on the Sul Ross campus. The consideration is part of a year-long effort to improve addressing across the tri-county area.


The Alpine City Council meets at 5:30 at the council chambers located at 803 W. Holland Avenue. 


Starting tomorrow and continuing through the week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University in Alpine will host several training sessions.

The first session – Dealing with Difficult People – is May 20 from 10 am to noon. In this Zoom webinar, you’ll learn how to identify behavioral differences and styles of communication.

The next training is Wednesday, May 21, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. This session will cover how to make better decisions with analytics. You can learn how to recognize trends about how customers engage with your business online and how to turn those insights into well-informed, actionable decisions. 

Then on Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m., there will be a session on succession planning. In this hour-long training, you’ll learn how to plan for your business’s survival into the future. A succession plan sets forth what you want to happen to your business after a particular event.
