Transcript:

Alpine High School has started a new digitization project to preserve historic editions of the school’s yearbook, El Ocotillo.

Through a grant, yearbook students and their advisor, Vaughn Grisham, have been scanning old copies of the yearbook – and so far, according to the district, they’ve scanned and restored both the 1948 and 1993 yearbooks. And they’re all available to alumni and the Alpine community online.

Retail giant Costco will soon open its largest store in Texas.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the 180,000-square-foot location will be located in Midland, and is set to open in July. The addition of the store is expected to draw excitement from Midland residents and beyond, bringing in customers from across the Permian Basin and the Big Bend.

Tomorrow Texas Parks and Wildlife will host a lecture on black bears in the region.

Join wildlife biologists and game wardens for a discussion and Q&A on living with black bears – from creating a so-called “BearWise” neighborhood and the history of black bears in the state to securing your home and the latest research on bears in the area.

The discussion takes place at the Alpine ISD auditorium from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30.

If you have any questions, you can contact TPWD at 432-244-9916.

This week, the Fort Davis National Historic Site will take visitors through the history of the Army’s camel experiment in Fort Davis in the 1850s.

On May 14 and 15, at the historic site, there will be living history presentations, featuring Doug Baum and his camels. And author Kathi Appelt will be there as well to give a presentation on her latest book, “Once Upon a Camel.”
For more information head to the historic site’s website.

On Wednesday, head to the Davis Mountains State Park for a walk to learn all about the birds that call the region home and the ones that are just passing through.

The Davis Mountains are a well known destination for birds, and over the course of the half-mile walk, you’ll become familiar with the migratory birds the area sees and the ones that live here year round – from acorn woodpeckers and the woodhouse scrub-jay to the montezuma quail.

The bird hike takes place Wednesday, May 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30. Interested participants will meet at the park’s interpretive center and begin the hike from there.

For a list of other park events happening this month head to the Davis Mountains State Park website.

On Thursday, May 15th – Yardie Vybz Dance Studio hosts a grand opening celebration.

Fort Davis is gearing up for their Fourth of July celebration — and as part of the annual event, they’re also hosting the “Coolest 5K in Texas” race.

The race – which benefits the Fort Davis Higher Education Foundation – will be Friday, July 4 at the Jeff Davis County Park. You can pick up your packet the morning of the race, any time between 7:15 and 7:45. The 1K fun run starts at 8, and the full 5K race begins at 8:30.

Next month, the two-day festival Smoke in the Mountains takes place in Fort Davis.

The family-friendly event is a fundraiser for Jeff Davis County first responders – it was founded in 2012 by Sara Adams following the devastating Rockhouse Fire that burned over 300,000 acres in the region.

This year’s event will be June 6 and 7 in Fort Davis at the courthouse lawn. There will be a BBQ competition, a silent auction, a cornhole tournament and a street dance featuring the Memphis Band and the Pecos River Band.
