The family of Penny Hardaway invites her friends to join her family and the congregation of First Christian in Alpine to remember and celebrate Penny’s life.

The celebration will be held tomorrow (TUESDAY) at 2 p.m.  There will be a reception honoring Penny following the memorial service. 

First Christian Church is located at 201 West Sul Ross Avenue.

Tonight (MONDAY), the city of Valentine is set to discuss the establishment of a man-camp in the area for border wall construction.

An agenda for the meeting says officials are set to consider a proposal for the city of Valentine to provide water, trash, and sewer services to the man-camp. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Valentine Community Complex, located at 100 Bell Street.

Officials are also accepting public comments on the proposals, which can be submitted by emailing summer.webb@srwebb.com.

Starting today (MONDAY), you can schedule a bulk trash pick-up with the city of Alpine.

Each household is limited to 5 items or 3 cubic yards worth items to be picked up. And you’ll have until Friday, April 3 before noon make your appointment. The trash pickup happens next week.

On Wednesday, Sul Ross will host an informational session for students interested in the school’s doctorate in educational leadership program.

The virtual meeting will be held Wednesday, April 1, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The session will provide an overview of the program and faculty will be there to answer questions about admissions and coursework. 

The program is designed specifically for superintendents, principals and school leaders, particularly those serving communities in rural Texas and in areas along the borderland 

Prospective students attending the session will also learn about the program structure, expectations for doctoral candidates and opportunities to collaborate with fellow education professionals.

Later this week, the Big Bend Arts Council’s next show will open. The show – “Dark Skies” – is a celebration through art of the beauty and importance of the famously dark nighttime sky in Far West Texas. 

The opening reception for the show is Friday, April 3, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m at the Big Bend Gallery, located at 121 W. Holland Avenue.

The Alpine Public Library is holding a patio sale next month (APRIL) and is now accepting donations for the fundraiser.

The library is looking for gently used items, which you can drop off at the library’s Re-Reads.

The patio sale will be Saturday, April 18.

Next month (APRIL), join McDonald Observatory in celebration of International Dark Sky Week with events planned throughout the region to recognize the region’s famous dark skies.

Events will be held April 13 through 19 at McDonald Observatory and in towns throughout the Big Bend, including Alpine, Fort Davis, Presidio and Terlingua.

On Saturday, April 18, there will be solar telescope viewings, meteorite demos and other hands-on activities at the Alpine Gem and Mineral Show. Then later that day there will be a Telescopes 101 demonstration for kids at the Alpine Public Library. And the day ends with a star party on the Kokernot Park soccer fields.
