U.S. Customs and Border Protection says military personnel will be dispatched to Big Bend area border patrol stations as part of troop deployments across the U.S.-Mexico border.
According to Marfa Public Radio, troops will be sent to Alpine, Van Horn and Presidio to QUOTE “assist agents with surveillance, intelligence gathering and logistical support.”
It’s unclear how many troops in total will be sent to the region in the end, but a CBP spokesperson told Marfa Public Radio that some troops have already arrived and others are expected in the near future.
The Alpine City Council meets tomorrow at 5:30 at the council chambers at 803 W. Holland Avenue.

The measles outbreak in the state has now increased to 259 cases – and of those cases, 34 people have now been hospitalized.
According to state officials, the majority of the measles cases were centered in Gaines County – and two additional counties, Lamar and Cochran, are now reporting infections there.
One unvaccinated, school-age child in Texas has died in the ongoing outbreak. And health officials in New Mexico have reported another death. That death was in Lea County, which borders Gaines County in Texas, where the outbreak is centered. But according to the Associated Press, it’s unclear if the cause of death was due to the measles or other health complications.
The state’s health department says due to the highly contagious nature of the measles that more cases in the outbreak area and surrounding communities are expected.
The state will give another update on the measles outbreak tomorrow.
