The inaugural Blue Ribbon Cook-off in Alpine this weekend was a huge success!
In the “Best Baked Good” category, there were 16 entries –– from pies and cookies to breads and cakes. In that category, first place went to Katy Williams who entered a Blueberry Pineapple Pina Colada Pie. Second place went to Cassidy Jacob for her Lemon Cupcakes and Third place went to Betsy Zumwalt’s “Berries on a Cloud” dish.
In the “Preserved Perfection” category, there were nine entries. First place went to Loraine Reynolds with her Dilly Beans, Front Street Books won second place for their pickles, and third place went to Sharon McClanahan with her Prickly Pear Jelly.
In the “Prize Pitmaster” category, there was only one entry – first place went to Scott McClanahan for his steak.
Organizers want to thank everyone who entered and the cook-off judges, County Judge Greg Henington and Kara Gerbert, managing editor of the Alpine Avalanche.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), county officials will hold their next commissioners meeting. The agenda includes department updates, including a report from the city of Alpine and the county judge’s report. Commissioners will also hear a presentation from the Marathon Water Supply Corporation over activities and operations.
The commissioner’s meeting is July 8 at 9:30 at the Brewster County Courthouse, located at 201 W. Ave. E.

This week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University in Alpine will host a few training sessions on improving your business.
In the first training this week – “Get your business on Google Search and Maps” – you’ll learn how to create and manage a Google Business Profile from start to finish. Learning this tool will ensure customers can find accurate, updated information about your local business on Google Search and Google Maps, no matter which device they use. This training is Wednesday, July 9 from 11 a.m. to noon.
The next training will go through A.I.-powered tools and how your business can benefit from them. In this 1-hour session, you’ll learn how AI search works differently from Google and the simple steps to take to help your business show up in ChatGPT and other AI results. This training is July 10 from 10 am to 11 am.
And later that day, the final training of the week is geared toward veteran-owned businesses and how to grow your business through federal contracting. That training is from 1 p.m. to 2:30.

Later this week, the Alpine Public Library will be hosting a Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event – or CRASE class. The one-day training will be July 12 at 10 a.m. The class is free and registration is required.

The Sul Ross Ag and rodeo annual fundraiser and reunion will be July 18 through the 20.
The events kick off Friday, July 18 with a 42 tournament at1 p.m. at Skelton’s Runway, located at 300 S. Cockrell St. in Alpine. That day there will also be a social, goat roping and corn hole.
The reunion continues on Saturday with team roping at the SALE Arena, a poker tournament and an award presentation and silent auction, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sul Ross.
The final day of the annual celebration features a golf tournament and a playday.
