Holly Taylor, an Austin-based attorney with over 17 years as a prosecutor in Travis County, is now running for a seat on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
As part of her campaign in the lead up to the November election, Taylor is making a stop in all of Texas’ 254 counties. She says she’s running to bring a QUOTE “independent voice” to the court of criminal appeals and to make sure cases receive a fair and thorough review.
She recently spoke with KVLF about her campaign:
TAYLOR1: “I am absolutely passionate about ensuring that our courts are fair and just and uphold the rule of law. And unlike most people that come to the table having a background either in criminal defense or prosecution, I’ve done both.” (0:15)
Taylor, a Democrat, is going up against Republican candidate John Messinger.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will soon begin a phased reopening of southern cattle ports, which have been closed for over a year to mitigate the spread of the New World Screwworm.
In a press release, the USDA says the staged reopening will begin in late August, starting with the port in Douglas, Arizona. From there, the department says it will initiate the QUOTE “operational steps necessary” to reopen ports in Santa Teresa and Columbus, New Mexico.
The agency says every animal entering the U.S. through these ports will undergo a full USDA inspection to make sure it’s free of New World screwworm. So far, there have been 42 documented cases of the parasitic fly – with the majority being in Texas.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), county officials will hold the next commissioner’s court meeting.
As part of the July 28 meeting, there will be a workshop on next year’s county budget. The discussion will cover wages and salaries and includes a review of a draft budget for 2027.
During commissioners court, officials will receive the usual department updates, which includes emergency services, the treasure’s office and the tourism department.
The next Brewster County commissioner’s court is Tuesday, July 28 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the county courthouse.

This weekend, the annual Marfa Golf Classic – a two person scramble challenge – takes place at the “highest course in Texas.”
The first place prize in the competition is $1,300, second place gets $750 and third place wins $550.

The annual event kicks off Friday, August 7 with a WRCA rodeo performance beginning at 7:00 p.m. That weekend there will also be a youth rodeo performance, a youth dummy roping contest and live music.
