Tomorrow (TUESDAY), Brewster County officials hold their first meeting of the new year.

According to an agenda for the Jan. 13 meeting, emergency services will be a focus for commissioners court. One of the agenda items officials will consider is accepting a $500,000 grant from the state of Texas to purchase ambulances.

Commissioners are also set to discuss the upcoming town hall meetings, where officials will get public feedback on ambulance services in the region. A taskforce has been meeting to figure out how to move forward with those services, since the contract with the current EMS provider is not being renewed.

The first town hall is January 21 at the Alpine Civic Center.

Commissioners court is Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 9:30 a.m. at the courthouse.

Also, tomorrow (TUESDAY), the Texas Historical Commission will host a workshop on creating “heritage experiences” that connect people to a place. 

The workshop is part of the commission’s Main Street program that aims to help small towns with revitalizing their historic centers. 

The all-day workshop is Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Museum of the Big Bend.

The workshop will go over new ideas for engaging both locals and visitors and how to create community events. 

The event is free to attend, but registration is required.

Later this week, McDonald Observatory will host a live deep-sky tour of the constellation orion. During the event, astronomers will  talk about Orion’s cultural significance and its importance in astronomy. 

During the event, on Wednesday, Jan. 14, moderators will also answer audience questions. And if weather permits, the observatory will show live views of Orion.

The Observatory will stream the event online – on Youtube, Facebook and Instagram.

This week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will host a few  training opportunities for business owners.

The first training of the week is tomorrow (TUESDAY) on Tuesday, Jan. 13. In this session, you’ll learn everything you need to be a better bookkeeper – you’ll go over the basics of bookkeeping, starting with why it matters for decision-making, tax compliance, and growth. 

The training is Jan. 13 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

The next training is Wednesday and will take you through the basics of intellectual property. In this one-hour webinar, you’ll learn about IP and ways to potentially protect your innovations as you move from idea to product. 

The training is Wednesday, Jan. 14 from 11 a.m. to noon.

Later this month (JANUARY), the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects will host a community conversation on elder care in the region and how to provide for the Big Bend’s aging population. 

The meeting is Thursday, Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the old schoolhouse.
