Monday, February 3rd Morning News

Transcript:

The Alpine Police Department received a report early Sunday of a body in Alpine Creek just
below the Holland Avenue bridge in the 400 block of West Holland.

Officers responded to find the body of a deceased male. An investigation was initiated and at this
time foul play is not suspected.
The body will be sent off for an autopsy. The identification of the deceased was not released
pending notification of next of kin.
Brewster County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Texas Rangers assisted. Case is pending further
investigation.

The Alpine City Council and Brewster County Commissioners Court, which normally meet on
alternate weeks, both have meetings scheduled for tomorrow.

Commissioner’s Court, which usually meets on the second and fourth week, will have a brief
called meeting.
Only two action items are on the seven-item agenda with the others being routine like the
invocation and pledge of allegiance.
The first is a request for proposal for a customized building to serve as a health-care clinic in
Study Butte.
The county and others have been studying ways of providing a health care clinic in South County
so residents don’t have to drive the 80 miles up and back to come to Alpine.
The other item is to update some parcels of land in Sunny Glenn west of Alpine.
Commissioners will meet at the usual time of 9:30 in their chambers in the Courthouse Annex.

City Council will meet at its usual time of 5:30 in the Council Chambers. We’ll have more on
that agenda on tomorrow’s newscast.

One item that could come up is action on the block of West Holland Avenue that was largely
destroyed in the May fire in the Florsheim Building.
Five businesses also were destroyed in the fire.
The City and County had discussed acquiring the building and preparing it for demolition but no
actions have been announced.

City Secretary Geo Calderon said it could come up in a closed-door Executive Session but it
does not show up on the printed agenda.

The Alpine Public Library will have a retirement reception Friday to honor Mary Beth Garrett’s
27 years of service to Alpine Public Library and the community.

Mary Beth started as a library volunteer in 1998. In 2008 she became the Children’s Librarian.
Many children and their parents have attended the Library’s Toddler Time and other kid’s
programs over the years.
You are invited to come by the Library from 5 to 7 Friday and wish her well in her well-earned
retirement.

The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will host two Tree and Shrub Pruning Workshops
from 9 to 11:30 Friday and again on February 21.

This week’s event is already booked and those interested should register for the workshop two
weeks later.
Jayme Trainer, Woodland Ecologist and Urban Forester from Texas A&M University Forest
Service, will lead the program.
It will include a 30- to 45-minute PowerPoint presentation followed by a 45-minute live
demonstration on different plant subjects in the C.D.R.I. Botanical Gardens.
Complimentary breakfast snacks and coffee will be served. Admission is free, but space is
limited to 15 participants.
To register, email Events@CDRI.org.
