Julia Nail Moss, of Alpine, passed away on February 6, surrounded by loved ones. She was 94.

Julia was born in Marathon in the home of her grandmother. She was the daughter of Sam Nail and Nena Burnham Nail.

Julia loved her family, Texas, and the Big Bend. She attended First Presbyterian Church of Alpine. She was devoted to researching her family’s genealogy. Active and founding member of the local Alpine chapters of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Daughters of the American Revolution. In retirement, she was called upon and happily cataloged libraries in Marathon, Terlingua and the Barton Warnock Center.

Julia and her siblings grew up on the family ranch in Southern Brewster County, on the west side of the Chisos Mountains. Later in life, Julia enrolled in Sul Ross State University and graduated with a double major in Spanish and English and a minor in Library Science.

After graduation she took a Civil Service job in the Library of the Department of Agriculture. She lived and worked in Washington D.C. during World War II. Missing West Texas, she moved to work in the libraries on the military bases of Fort Bliss and Laughlin Air Force Base. 

She married John M. Moss in 1950, whom she met while visiting her parents on their ranch. After having two children, she returned to work and was employed by Sul Ross State University until her retirement in 1983.

Julia is survived by two daughters, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1993.

She was loved, deeply admired and will be missed.

Early voting in the March primaries starts tomorrow (TUESDAY) and runs through February 27.

In Brewster County, early voting for all precincts takes place at the Judge Val Clark Beard Complex at 203 North 7th Street in Alpine.

This week, polls will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. And on Saturday, February 21, you can vote from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Tomorrow, (TUESDAY) city officials will hold a workshop to discuss an ordinance for regulating the use of golf carts, so-called “pocket bikes,” and mini-motorbikes within the city. 


The workshop starts at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 17 at city council chambers. 

Afterwards, officials will hold the next city council meeting, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

On the agenda is a resolution adopting the city’s community services grant program policy and application. Officials will also discuss and review updates to a potential new logo for the city of Alpine.

In the next two days, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will host a couple of training opportunities for business owners.

In the first training, you’ll learn how to efficiently film and edit short-form videos using tools that are straightforward for anyone with a small business. You’ll go through lighting setups, editing tools and how to title your videos to get the most views.

The webinar is tomorrow (TUESDAY) from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Then on Wednesday, February 18, you’ll get a crash course in improving individual and team performance. This one-hour talk will introduce you to outcome management and how it’s one of the most important processes that teams or individuals need to manage for success and growth.

That training is from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

This weekend, the Alpine Humane Society will hold a fundraiser to help bring a vet clinic to Terlingua. 

The clinic will provide spaying, neutering, vaccinations and microchipping services for south county residents. 

The fundraiser will be Sunday, February 22 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Venga. There will be food, music, a cash-bar, a pet costume contest and other activities.
