A new permanent art gallery has been established in the Alpine Visitor Center, dedicated to the
display of all of the first-place winners from the city’s photo contest.

The photography contest started in 2011 and is now in its 14 th year. Each year, a different judge is
invited to select the winning photographs.
Alpine Director of Tourism Chris Ruggia said the contest benefits from the fact that each year’s
winner comes from a completely different artistic sensibility.
He said that gives the selections an incredible variety and you never know what kind of image is
going to win from one year to the next.
Ruggia thanked Center Director Heather Yadon for allowing the winners to be recognized in the
real world for the first time.
For more information, call Ruggia at 837-9008.

Texas State Parks Centennial projects at parks across the state have benefited from enhanced
accessibility projects largely as a result of private donations.

In our area, projects have benefited Big Bend Ranch State Park, Davis Mountains State Park and
Devils River Natural Area north of Del Rio.
Big Bend Ranch got a search and rescue vehicle, Davis Mountain received astronomy equipment
and Devil’s River got kayaks and related equipment.
Jessica Burke, accessibility manager for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said that so
many park superintendents chose accessibility-related items shows the need for that access.
She said about one in four Texans have a disability and they are working to ensure parks
infrastructure meets Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

Author Larry Francell of Fort Davis has introduced his new book “My Summer Vacation: The
Victorio Campaign Journal of Colonel Robert Grierson in 1880.”

His latest history book takes you through Fort Davis and beyond in a comprehensive look at
what happened during the Victorio Campaign that summer.
Colonel Benjamin Henry Grierson of the Tenth Cavalry describes the stand he made at
Rattlesnake Springs in July during that summer campaign.
Accompanying his father was son Robert, a bright, articulate young man in search of adventure.
He documented that summer with his father chasing Victorio through West Texas.
Francell has written several other books about the region plus numerous articles on local history
and museum operations.
