Big Bend National Park issued a press release about an apparent suicide last week at the summit
of Emory Peak, the park’s highest point and the highest in the Chisos Mountains.
The Park Communication Center received a 911 call Wednesday from a group of hikers reporting
a gunshot and a seriously-injured visitor at the summit.
With the support of helicopters from U.S. Customs Air and Marine Operations and Texas D.P.S.,
a Park Ranger reached the mountaintop late Wednesday.
There he located the body of a 35-year-old man from Florence, near Austin. With diminishing
daylight, the ranger remained on scene overnight.
The body was recovered the next morning. Cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted
gunshot wound.
The next training by the Sul Ross Small Business Development Center will be from 10 to 11
Tuesday on how the Corporate Transparency Act Will Make or Break Your Business.
The act is a federal law that aims to deter money laundering and other illicit and illegal activities
by forming shell and sham entities that obfuscate the true ownership of corporate entities.
Effective January 1, the United States Financial Crimes Network mandates the filing and
disclosing of beneficial ownership information reports to the Treasury Department.
This requirement includes Limited Liability Corporations, C-Corporations, certain Statutory
Trusts and Limited Partnerships.
Failure to adhere to the required filing requirements carries civil and criminal penalties.

The Big Bend Art Council’s Holiday Show is Thursday but the deadline is Tuesday for
submitting art to display at the show.
Last year, it was Affordable Art. But this year, instead of limiting the selling price, the council
has decided to limit only the size of artwork.
New rules for this show are that all media are welcome with no price limitation. Size is limited to
no larger than 16 by 20 inches.
The show is planned as a reception scheduled for Thursday, the same day as the City Wassail
Crawl.
The Crawl is from 4 to 8:30 that evening. Depending upon foot traffic, the gallery may stay open
a little longer than that.
Those participating in the Holiday Show and members of the Big Bend Gallery should plan to
come and have been asked to bring a little snack.
Plans are for a special cider or hot chocolate for everyone.
