Blue Origin over the weekend scrubbed a launch that was set to take off from its facility north of Van Horn, carrying over 40 scientific and research payloads.
On its website, the company said the uncrewed New Shepard launch was nixed because they found an issue “related to the booster’s avionics”
Blue Origin–owned by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos–expects to announce a new launch date soon.

It’s Welcome Week for students at Sul Ross State University.
Starting today and continuing all this week, the Alpine campus will host a variety of events for new and returning students.
From 4 to 7 p.m., head to the university pool for a back to school pool party. Other events include a farmer’s market on Wednesday at the parking lot between Lawrence and Ferguson halls and back to school bingo. Then on Thursday, it’s the Lobo Club Rush – where you can explore campus organizations and learn more about getting involved on campus. That’s 5 to 7 p.m. at University Center Mall.

Tomorrow, the Presidio County Historical Commission will unveil a new historical marker in the region.
The sign – just northwest of Highway 67 – tells the history of the Native Peoples of La Junta de los Rios, a part of the region stretching across what are now the cities of Presidio and Ojinaga. In part, the marker tells of the Indigenous presence in the region, which goes back thousands of years. Today, descendants of these native groups continue to live in the area.
The unveiling of the marker takes place at 7 p.m., just west of FM 170 and Northwest of U.S. 67.

Tuesday afternoon, the Brewster County Tourism Council meets for its next regularly scheduled meeting.
The council will receive regular updates from different groups in the county – including chambers of commerce, Big Bend National Park and Alpine Tourism.
They’ll also review, discuss and take action on a strategic plan for Visit Big Bend.
The council meets at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Val Beard Conference Room, located at 203 N. 7th Street in Alpine.

This weekend, the 38th annual Marfa Lights Festival takes place – bringing music, food and a weekend full of entertainment to the lawn of the Presidio County courthouse.
The three-day event starts Friday, August 29 with a slate of local music acts, including the bands the Grand Tourists and Baby Steps.
On Saturday, the festival starts with a parade at 10:30 a.m. That day’s entertainment includes Grupo Asalto from Snyder, Texas – along with La Sombra, and the Tex-Mex Hippies

Next month, a veteran resource pop-up is coming to Alpine.
On September 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., several agencies will come together to assist and provide veterans, servicemembers and their families with resources, employment opportunities and other resources.
The event takes place at the Morgan University Center at Sul Ross State University.
