The City of Alpine and local coffee shops are partnering on a new initiative called “The Alpine Coffee Club,” which they hope will help reduce waste across the city.
In an interview with KVLF, Heath Haydon at the Visitor’s Center, says the idea began a few months ago when the owner of a local coffee shop approached her with the idea of providing reusable mugs to both residents and tourists to help cut down on trash.
“It’s going to be this really nice, reusable coffee cup – it’s like a travel-mug style. // and the agreement from the coffee shops is they’re gonna offer a discount if you come in with this cup. // Basically by getting a cup from us you’re making a pledge that you’re gonna use it and not keep creating more trash.”
Haydon says the mugs are free and available at the visitor’s center.
Tomorrow is the last day for early voting.
This election, The only competitive race in Alpine is for the city council Ward 1 seat. In that race, Alpine voters will choose between Austin Smith, Andy Ramos and Richard Portillo. Meanwhile in Marfa, municipal elections were canceled, since only incumbents filed to hold onto their seats on the city council and on the Marfa ISD school board.
In Presidio, however, voters will have a lot to consider – including a nearly $10 million dollar school bond that, if approved, would go toward updating school facilities and purchasing new buses. On the ballot, the race for two full-term council seats has drawn a five-person candidate field: Bianca Martinez-Bailon, Arian Velazquez-Ornelas, Silverio Escontrias, Abel “Billy” Hernandez, and Jose “Pepe” Acosta. And in the race for an “unexpired term” on the council, Juan Sanez and Alondra Flores are running.
