Tomorrow, early voting starts for local municipal elections across the region. Carlos Morales has a breakdown of the elections happening across the Big Bend.
In Marfa, municipal elections were canceled since only incumbents filed to hold onto their seats on the city council and on the Marfa ISD school board. Meanwhile, in Alpine, the race for a seat on the city council to represent Ward 1 is the ONLY competitive race – Austin Smith, Andy Ramos and Richard Portillo are all vying for that seat on the council.
Voters in Presidio will cast their ballots for city council, school board, and will weigh in on a nearly $10 million dollar bond proposal. In the city council election, current Mayor John Ferguson is running unopposed. The race for the two full-term council seats has drawn a five-person candidate field: Bianca Martinez-Bailon, Arian Velazquez-Ornelas, Silverio Escontrias, Abel “Billy” Hernandez and Jose “Pepe” Acosta. And in the race for an “unexpired term” on the council, Juan Sanez and Alondra Flores are running.
Meanwhile, in the Presidio school board election, three seats are up for grabs. The candidates include Iris S. Galindo, Tino Martinez, Josefina Burrola, Maria Loyola Montoya, Jose A. Padilla and Jeremy Velasquez. And voters will also decide on a school bond, which if approved, would go toward updating school facilities and buying new school buses.
Early Voting starts Tuesday and will continue through April 29.
Election Day is May 3.
As Marathon Public Library nears the opening of their brand new facilities, they’re in need of additional community support.
The library says the growth of the building will allow them to offer more books, dedicated learning areas for children and adults, and a large community room for activities and gatherings. But they say the expansion also comes with a quote “greater need for support” to sustain the Marathon Public Library.
