Good evening, today is Tuesday, May 9th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
We finally received the obituary for retired Sul Ross Professor and long-time Brewster County Democrat Chair Dale Christophersen, who died March 19.
Dale Bjorn Christophersen was born on December 16, 1940, and died peacefully at the Austin home of his daughter Kirsten, ending a battle with lung cancer and chronic pulmonary disease.
He grew up in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and worked his way through college and graduate school.
Dale earned a B.A. in Political Science from Augustana College in Sioux Falls and an M.A. from the University of Missouri.
He received a teaching appointment at Sul Ross State University in 1965. He moved to Alpine and met his wife Ann Welles while working part-time at the Fort Davis National Historic Site.
He ultimately earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Missouri and they returned to Alpine in 1971 where he worked until retirement in 2012.
Dale was preceded in death by a brother and survived by his wife, daughter Kirsten, a brother and a granddaughter.
Angel Care Hospice of Midland is now up and running in Brewster County and working to expand into Presidio and Jeff Davis Counties.
Representatives of the service spoke to Brewster County Commissioners Tuesday morning.
County Judge Greg Henington told them he used their service when his father-in-law passed away recently.
Lanay Lopez said hospice care is for the terminally ill and Tiffny Bird said it is financed by Medicare and sometimes by Medicaid.
Angel Care, with home offices in San Angelo and a large presence in Midland, is the largest private hospice care provider in the U.S., keeping terminal patients safe at home.
It now serves patients in Alpine and as far south as Double Diamond but is interested in growing into South County.
County Judge Greg Henington, the former chief of Terlingua Fire and E.M.S., said the Emergency Center in Terlingua can provide oxygen for medical care when needed.
In other action, Emergency Management Coordinator Stephany Elmore told the court that numerous grass fires have plagued the area under what she called “super dry” conditions.
Alpine Independent School District has announced the Pre-Kinder and Kinder Round-up for the 2023-24 school year scheduled Monday at the Elementary School.
Parents can register their child entering Pre-K-3, Pre-K-4 or Kindergarten next year from 10 to 2 at the Elementary Library and 5:30 to 7:30 at the Elementary cafeteria.
The district’s Pre-K-3, Pre-K-4 and Kindergarten programs are all full-day, free programs with open enrollment for all children that age in the community.
Parents must bring their birth certificate, social security number, immunization records and the parent’s driver’s license to register.
Children must turn 3 before September 1 to qualify for Pre-K-3 and 4 before September 1 to qualify for Pre-K-4.
The district is moving to an online registration system for the 2023-24 school year and will pilot the online registration system during PreK/Kinder Round-Up.

The annual Coolest July 4 Fireworks Extravaganza will be at 9:30 pm Sunday, July 2, the largest, most impressive display in the tri-county area.
It brings thousands of locals and tourists alike. Every dollar raised goes towards this production which brings visitors from a wide area.
