Good evening, today is Monday, May 9th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Alpine Downtown Association has invited interested citizens to an open meeting Wednesday to celebrate local businesses and non-profit organizations in the area.
The quarterly “Business & Non-Profit Mixer” will provide an opportunity to learn more about upcoming events, new and opening businesses and economic development resources.
Guest speakers will include the Fielder family of Chisos Brewery, a representative of Gallery Night’s Spirits of the West Wine and Beef Fest and Tom and Sharon Kelner of Alpine Wine.
Also, a representative of the Sul Ross Small Business Development Center, Alpine Historical Association on Alpine Community Projects and newly-elected Mayor Catherine Eaves.
The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the new Pavilion at the Alpine Visitor Center at 106 North 3rd Street.

Candidates for Brewster County Judge met Thursday in the Alpine School District auditorium to share their viewpoints ahead of the May 24 runoff elections.
Ryan Skelton and Greg Henington are running for the Republican nomination while Mimi Smith and Oscar Cobos are running for the Democratic nomination.
Cobos was not present at this meeting.
Henington said his diverse set of skills in business, community service and health make him a strong candidate for Brewster County Judge.
Henington: “I look forward to seeing Brewster County prosper, I look forward to it being successful, see its citizens thrive and to have a great lifestyle that I tell you a lot of people in this country would really envy.”
Skelton said his experience as Brewster County chief deputy gives him a familiarity with the law and an objective viewpoint when it comes to due process.
Skelton: “When you break the law, you break the law. Everyone is treated in an equal manner, no matter wealth, race, creed or social standing. And that’s the neat thing about our system of government. I have a deep conviction for the protection, defense and preservation of our constitution.”
Smith has practiced law for 30 years and said she hopes to focus on planning for the long-term if she is elected.
Smith: “But in a more dynamic way. I don’t want to keep planning for the same things. I want to go into the 21st Century. For the people of Brewster County one of the things I want most of all is much more access to what’s going on.”
All candidates agreed that while being elected County Judge is a priority, they’ll all continue to work together for the community when elections finish.
One person was killed and two injured late Sunday in a flaming two-vehicle collision on Highway 67 approximately 15 miles South of Marfa.
The Texas D.P.S. reports that two vehicles collided head on, one overturned after the collision and one burst into flames. The DPS report did not make clear which vehicle burned.
Killed in the accident was 63-year-old Mario Rodriguez of Chihuahua. Luis Ramon Montoya Aguilar and Levi Avila of Odessa sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
And Fort Davis Justice Court Clerk Barbara Weesner asked us to pass along that those called for Justice Court Jury Duty at 10 a.m. Wednesday do not need to appear.

Los candidatos a juez del condado de Brewster se reunieron el jueves en el auditorio del distrito escolar de Alpine para compartir sus puntos de vista antes de la segunda vuelta de las elecciones del 24 de mayo.

En el accidente murió Mario Rodríguez, de 63 años, de Chihuahua. Luis Ramon Montoya Aguilar y Levi Avila de Odessa sufrieron lesiones que no ponen en peligro la vida.
Y la secretaria del Tribunal de Justicia de Fort Davis, Barbara Weesner, nos pidió que comunicáramos que los llamados a servir como jurado en el Tribunal de Justicia a las 10 a. m. del miércoles no necesitan presentarse.
