This week, the Marathon Public Library finished moving into their new building, hauling over 10,000 books in the process.
The new space has been an effort years in the making and will see the library expand its programming and services to the Marathon community.
With the move, Marathon Public Library is giving up its beloved title as the smallest accredited library in all of Texas.
Dara Cavness, the library’s director, says the new facility is nearly four times the library’s previous size.
she mentioned she always enjoyed telling visitors that they were the smallest accredited library. And now that’s not it – it’s kind of bittersweet.
With the new space, the library will have a community room, areas for infants, children and teens, an outdoor garden and expanded stacks for the library’s collections. And Cavness says the new space will allow them to offer even more programming.
In the last few days, Mary Beth Schaefer says the community came together to help the library with the move. She’s the library’s board president.
they had a lot of community members coming to volunteer and even the kids came by and were carrying books from the old library to the new library, so it’s nice that they kind of have a stake in the new library.
Another part of the renovation will see the nearby adobe schoolhouse–the first-one built in Brewster County–restored into a history museum. And that should be complete by fall 2026.
And while the new library is already open, Cavness says they’re eyeing early November for a grand opening celebration.
The local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects now has a place to call home, following this week’s city council meeting, where officials approved of a lease agreement for the use of a building at 205 E. Sul Ross Avenue.
According to the Big Bend Sentinel, the building is commonly referred to as the old Sunshine House Senior Center, but it was originally built as a schoolhouse in the late 1800s, and has also served the functions of a hospital, Border Patrol station, Sul Ross dormitory and offices for the Soil Conservation Service.
The building is currently owned by the city and has been vacant for some time.
The city is leasing the space to the nonprofit for $1 a year.
This weekend, the cross-border celebration Voices From Both Sides returns.
Organizers are inviting people across the region to head to Paso Lajitas, along the border in South Brewster County, Saturday, May 10 starting at 11 a.m. They say, it will be a beautiful day for fellowship and music with family and friends.
The cross-border party started in 2013 to celebrate the connections between Lajitas, Texas and Paso Lajitas, Chihuahua.
Later this spring, the San Angelo Art Club presents the 38th annual “Fiesta in Realism.”
The all-painting show, competition and sale takes place from June 8 to the 29. SAAC members and nonmembers are encouraged to enter the show. There will be cash awards for the top work in each of the three categories – works in acrylic, oil paintings and watercolor paintings.
“Fiesta in Realism” will take place at the Kendall Art Gallery, located at 119 W. 1st Street in downtown San Angelo.

Dara Cavness, directora de la biblioteca, afirma que las nuevas instalaciones son casi cuatro veces más grandes que las anteriores.
