Robert Harold Flanders died peacefully at his home in Alpine earlier this year. He was 81
Robert was born in Denver, Colorado, but lived in many places as a child due to his father’s career. Robert was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War and did his alternative service in Honduras. During this time, he married Rice Flanders. The couple later settled in New England and had two children.
A graduate of Antioch College, Robert worked over the years as a jeweler, teacher, baker, counselor, and fisherman. He became a Unitarian Universalist minister in 1982.
Robert had a deep love and respect for the natural world: he spent cherished time kayaking, hiking, cycling, rollerbladering, and he even climbed cliffs and frozen waterfalls with one of his sons.
Robert lived everywhere from Maine to Alaska, but settled in Alpine in the mid-2000s to care for Mary. He became a Texas Master Naturalist and spent many happy hours at the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute.
A self-described “rock hound,” Robert loved searching West Texas arroyos for finds. He became a fixture at the Alpine farmer’s market, selling kimchi and crafts. In his later years, Robert found wonder and solace in his yard, cultivating a cactus collection with loving care.
Robert is survived by his two children and four grandchildren, dear friends and many cousins.
An informal memorial service will be held for Robert at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Alpine next weekend on Saturday, May 16, at 4 p.m.

This weekend, Brewster County will continue its annual countywide cleanup event.
Brewster County trucks will visit several locations in the county and will accept your junk and rubbish. Some of what the county will pick up include furniture and household items, mattresses and bedding, some appliances, yard waste and tires. A separate trailer for tires will be available. All tires must have the wheels and rims removed.
The next county pick up will be Saturday, May 9 in Marathon and in Alpine from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Marathon pickup will be at the Road and Bridge Yard on North Albert St., and the pickup in Alpine will be at the landfill.

On Tuesday, Brewster County officials will hold the next commissioners court at the courthouse in Alpine.
According to an agenda for the meeting, commissioners will consider funding for the construction of a new library in Study Butte. Officials are also set to discuss setting a date for a public hearing on the formation of an emergency services district in north Brewster County.
The creation of the district was recommended to the country as a way to fund emergency services in the northern part of the county.
Commissioners meet Tuesday, May 12 at 9:30 a.m. at the Brewster County Courthouse.

Next week, Leadership Big Bend will host a volunteer event at Sul Ross.
The volunteer event will give the tri-county area an opportunity to connect with and get involved in different nonprofit groups across the region. You’ll learn about all the ways you can volunteer and support your community.
The volunteer event will be May 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the University Center on the campus of Sul Ross.

Later this month (MAY), the Alpine Cowboys baseball season kicks off with the Home Run 5K and 10K at Kokernot Field.
The race takes place Saturday, May 23. And whether you enter the 5K or 10K, you’ll reach the finish line at home plate with the Cowboys team cheering you on. The 10K race starts that morning at 9:00 with the 5K run starting at 9:15.
Water, fruit, and your finisher medal will be waiting for you at the finish line!

At the end of May, Big Bend Telephone will host their third annual golf tournament at the Alpine Country Club.
The tournament is a three-person scramble with 27 overall teams competing for the top spot. Entry is $85 per person and proceeds benefit the Alpine Humane Society.
The scramble is May 30 with tee off beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Robert Harold Flanders falleció pacíficamente en su hogar en Alpine a principios de este año. Tenía 81 años.
Robert nació en Denver, Colorado, pero vivió en muchos lugares durante su infancia debido a la carrera profesional de su padre. Robert fue objetor de conciencia durante la Guerra de Vietnam y realizó su servicio alternativo en Honduras. Durante esa época, contrajo matrimonio con Rice Flanders. A Robert le sobreviven sus dos hijos y cuatro nietos, así como queridos amigos y numerosos primos.
Se celebrará un servicio conmemorativo informal en honor a Robert en la Iglesia Unitaria Universalista de Alpine el próximo fin de semana, el sábado 16 de mayo, a las 4:00 p. m.

Este fin de semana, el condado de Brewster continuará con su evento anual de limpieza en todo el condado.
Los camiones del condado de Brewster visitarán varias ubicaciones dentro del condado y recibirán sus desechos y basura. La próxima semana, Leadership Big Bend organizará un evento de voluntariado en Sul Ross.
