Charles Allen Bell, who provided arts education in Alpine and across the Big Bend, died April 28. He was 69 years old.
Bell, who was born in Frankfurt, Germany, spent part of his early years in El Paso, Texas. And after graduating from Irving High School, he moved to Alpine to pursue an art degree at Sul Ross State University. He had many galleries throughout the years, hosting creative one-man and group art shows. He was also deeply passionate about music.
Despite all of his creative endeavors, Bell’s proudest accomplishment was his family. He shared fifty beautiful years with his loving wife Susie, while being an amazing father to their two children, as well as loving grandfather to their two grandchildren.
A celebration of Bell’s incredible life is being planned for the near future.

Sul Ross State University, along with the National Science Foundation and the Museum of the Big Bend, is hosting a series of summer camps for students throughout the Big Bend.
In an interview with KVLF, Dr. Jennifer Miller at Sul Ross State University said the one-day summer camps will focus on STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“We think these one-day camp opportunities would allow people from outside to come and also enjoy the camp opportunities in nearby communities. So it’s open to the whole area, and it’s free to all fourth- to eighth-grade students.” (0:16)
The summer camps will be on July 22 and July 23. Students must apply – you can find the application by visiting the Sul Ross State University Education Department page on Facebook.
Then, in July, Sul Ross will host a STEAM camp for students.

The difference between STEM and STEAM is that this particular camp will be putting the arts into the activities for the students as well.”

The Blackwell National Historic Site in Marfa has received a $20,000 dollar grant to create a traveling exhibit on the legacy of Mexican schools and the impacts of segregation in public education across the U.S.
The exhibit will use historical photographs and oral histories to tell the experiences of Hispanic students in these segregated school systems.
John Lujan, the vice president of the Blackwell School Alliance, said the group was honored to receive the grant and that “we owe it to our elders to tell the stories of this powerful place, to honor their memories, and to carry on the torch of preservation.”
Next week, Texas Parks and Wildlife will host a lecture on black bears in the region.
Join wildlife biologists and game wardens for a discussion and Q&A on living with black bears – from creating a so-called “BearWise” neighborhood and the history of black bears in the state to securing your home and the latest research on bears in the area.
The discussion takes place Tuesday, May 13 at the Alpine ISD auditorium from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30.

Charles Allen Bell, quien brindó educación artística en Alpine y en todo el Big Bend, murió el 28 de abril. Tenía 69 años.
Bell, que nació en Frankfurt, Alemania, pasó parte de sus primeros años en El Paso, Texas. Y después de graduarse de Irving High School, se mudó a Alpine para obtener una licenciatura en arte en la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross. Tuvo muchas galerías a lo largo de los años, presentando exposiciones de arte creativas individuales y grupales. También era un apasionado de la música.
A pesar de todos sus esfuerzos creativos, el logro del que Bell se enorgullecía era su familia. Compartió cincuenta hermosos años con su amada esposa Susie, y al mismo tiempo fue un padre maravilloso para sus dos hijos, así como un abuelo amoroso para sus dos nietos.

La Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross, junto con la Fundación Nacional de Ciencias y el Museo del Big Bend, organiza una serie de campamentos de verano para estudiantes en todo el Big Bend.
En una entrevista con KVLF, la Dra. Jennifer Miller de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross dijo que los campamentos de verano de un día se centrarán en STEM: ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas.

Luego, en julio, Sul Ross organizará un campamento STEAM para estudiantes.

El Sitio Histórico Nacional Blackwell en Marfa ha recibido una subvención de $20,000 dólares para crear una exposición itinerante sobre el legado de las escuelas mexicanas y los impactos de la segregación en la educación pública en los Estados Unidos.

La próxima semana, el Departamento de Parques y Vida Silvestre de Texas ofrecerá una conferencia sobre los osos negros en la región.
Únase a los biólogos de vida silvestre y los guardabosques para una discusión y preguntas y respuestas sobre cómo vivir con osos negros, desde la creación de un vecindario llamado “BearWise” y la historia de los osos negros en el estado hasta la seguridad de su hogar y las últimas investigaciones sobre los osos en el área.
La discusión se llevará a cabo el martes 13 de mayo en el auditorio del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine de 6:30 p.m. a 8:30 p.m.
