The Alpine City Council at its next regular meeting Tuesday will hear updates on some key issues that have occupied past council discussions.
City Manager Megan Antrim is scheduled to discuss updates on water infrastructure and repairs to the wastewater treatment plant. The City admitted to being in violation of monitoring requirements reporting to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, blaming the mistake on a new employee.
The issue was the city’s water infrastructure and the requirement that it report on its testing.
The city answer said it was a reporting error, not the fault of equipment, and that the water supply was never unsafe. And the city has a grant application in the works for a major upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant. Antrim also will report on plans for street repairs, always one of the key needs reported by citizens.
Discussion items are scheduled for several items, including a study by state on what to do about the Union Pacific Railroad bridge over Highway 90 in West Alpine.
It has been the scene of several traffic outages when trucks too tall for the bridge’s posted clearance of 13 feet, seven inches damages the bridge and stops traffic in its place. Discussion items do not require a vote by council.
And in the consent agenda, Council will be asked to approve the appointment of Heidi Wasserman to the Hotel Occupancy Tax Committee.
As always, the council will meet at 5:30 Tuesday at the City Council Chambers at 803 West Holland Avenue.
We said here yesterday that Monday’s city election was very close, one vote decided one of two contested races.
Lori A. Griffin came out one short in her race against Lucy A. Escovedo for the Ward 4 seat currently held by Martin Sandate.
Griffin told us the one-vote difference is what she called a “great lesson” on the way elections can work.
It also made it an obvious choice for her to ask for a recount. She said the turnout was very light with only 65 people voting in the two contested elections. In the other one, the special election for Ward 1, Reagan Stone defeated Jennifer Peal 42 to 35. Stone will replace Judy Stokes who announced she is stepping down.
City Secretary Geo Calderon said if the recount later this week changes the number, the city can amend it before the canvass. Recount now is scheduled for Thursday.
Mayor Catherine Eaves was unopposed for re-election and Eva L. Olivas was the only one to file for Ward Two. She will replace Chris Rodriguez who did not run.
Marathon’s Craig Carter and his Spur of the Moment Band will perform Friday at B.B.Q. and Boots at the Ole Crystal Bar benefitting the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend.
Dinner will be served from 6 to 10 and dancing will be from 8 to Midnight and there will be a silent auction and more.

Registration is open for the summer session of G.E.D. classes at Alpine Public Library.
Orientation will be Thursday with classes starting Monday, May 13. G.E.D. classes will be Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Se han programado temas de discusión para varios temas, incluido un estudio por estado sobre qué hacer con el puente de Union Pacific Railroad sobre la autopista 90 al oeste de Alpine.
Ha sido escenario de varios cortes de tráfico cuando camiones demasiado altos para el espacio libre indicado para el puente de 13 pies y siete pulgadas dañan el puente y detiene el tráfico en su lugar.
Los temas de discusión no requieren una votación por parte del consejo.
