Good evening, today is Friday, May 6th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Kevin Carlton Farrer of Alpine died of depression April 29 at the age of 59.
He was born Jan. 28, 1963, in Jourdanton, Texas, where the family lived.
Kevin discovered his love of golf at an early age and he excelled in competitions while attending Pleasanton High School where he graduated in 1981.
The success he found in his game led him to South Plains College on a golf scholarship and he later got his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Sul Ross State University.
Kevin spent most of his life in West Texas, including Marfa, Fort Davis, Study Butte and Alpine where he worked as a greenskeeper, teacher’s aide and car salesman.
But he spent the last years of his life employed by West Texas National Bank in Alpine and Study Butte.
He was preceded in death by his father. Surviving are two children, a stepdaughter, his mother and a sister.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to or dropped off at the Alpine Country Club.
Alpine’s Gallery Night will present the First Annual Spirits of the West Wine & Beef Fest the last weekend in May.
It celebrates West Texas wine makers, beef producers, spirit distillers and craft brewers.
It begins Friday, May 27, with a V.I.P. wine pairing event from 5 to 9 p.m.
It will showcase signature wine and beef bites crafted by local chefs using one of the area’s most sought-after resources, local beef.
Up to 250 tickets for 75 dollars each will provide four drink tickets and an evening of live jazz band music, an art sneak preview and a Meet and Greet with regional artists.
Also featured are cutting boards, a raffle for grill-theme gift baskets and samples from selected Spirit Vendors.
Guest speakers will include local cattle rancher Mitch Aufdengarten and a V.I.P. ticket will grant access to the events all weekend.
Saturday will have a Beef for Breakfast Fun Run, an all-day 6th Street Festival Saturday and Sunday, a Sommelier Paring Class and a Ranch to Table Workshop.
Sunday will bring the event to an end with a Bloody Mary Brunch.

Visit Marathon has announced the First Annual New Moon Festival planned for Saturday, May 28, at the Marathon Motel.
From 2 p.m. until dusk vendors will be present with food, drinks and more with a star party after dark.
Music will be offered at 6 p.m. and beer, wine and appetizers will be available for purchase, catered by the French Company Grocer featuring Chateau Wright wines.
Dr. Vincent Hue will host a presentation on the James Webb Telescope as the nights guest speaker starting at 7 p.m.
Telescopes also will be available for guests to view stars under some of the darkest skies in the United States.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales and a large group of House Republicans have introduced a resolution honoring a National Guardsman who drowned trying to rescue illegal migrants.
Sergeant Bishop E. Evans of Arlington died while saving the lives of migrants attempting to cross the Rio Grande.
Last week, the National Guard also posthumously promoted Evans from Specialist to Sergeant.
It was learned later that the migrants who got in trouble in the rapidly-moving river had been involved in a smuggling attempt.
