Good evening, today is Thursday, May 5th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
A private memorial service for Bettye Lynn McGehee will be scheduled later. She died Wednesday after a short illness at age 71.
A life of music beginning with the gift of a violin when she was five took her around the world, ending at performances around the Big Bend area.
Bettye was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on February 18, 1951, and her violin created a musical path that included Houston’s Junior Symphony and tours of Great Britain, Mexico and Europe.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from Southwestern University and spent many years with the Houston Symphony and Houston Opera Company.
Recording studio time was spent with many known artists including Andre Previn and Shaft.
When the Aid epidemic ravaged the Houston area, Bettye raised funds with her brother Thom, a choreographer.
And she was drawn to serve by obtaining a degree in Mortuary Science at the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Services.
It was at her position at a cemetery that she met her partner, Connie Cornett, in 2001and they moved together to Alpine and Fort Davis.
Together they co-owned Sixth Street Bakery in Alpine and Bettye played in the orchestra pit in the Sul Ross Summer Theatre program.
She also played with many local musicians at dances, weddings, funerals and parties in the area.
Bettye was preceded in death by a brother. Surviving are her partner, another brother and many of Connie’s relatives.
Alpine Memorial Funeral Home will oversee arrangements. Donations can be made to Grand Companions in Fort Davis.
Thursday is Cinco de Mayo and the big parade scheduled for Saturday will feature the oldest Alpine citizen as one of the Grand Marshals.
It starts at 11 a.m. Saturday on Holland Avenue and offers the usual parades, fiestas, mariachi and Tejano music and Mexican food from vendors.
Riding in the parade will Olivia Ramos, who was born in Alpine in 1916, and she will turn 106 years old in September. Sister Angelita Valenzuela will be co-marshal.
The Gran Mercado will be open all day and a Car Show in memory of Kaleen Ramos will be from 1 to 4 with the presentation at 4.
Also the Marfa I.S.D. Ballet Folklorico, the Fort Davis Folklorico Dancers and Epic Energy Studio will present.
The celebration of El Dia de las Madres, a free dance under the stars, will be that evening.
Saturday is Election Day for Alpine City and School Board elections and statewide for two proposed Constitutional Amendments.
During early voting, 425 cast ballots in the city election, 78 in the school and 459 in the constitutional amendment election.
School Board elections will be in the City Council Chamber and the lone school race for District Seven only will be in the Civic Center, both from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Constitutional Amendment voters will be in their regular voting places.
Precinct One will be Sunny Glen Cooperative Building at 2209 West Highway 90 and Precincts Two and Eight at the Val Beard Office Building.
Precinct Three will be at the Marathon Community Center, Precinct Four will be at the Civic Center and Five, Six and Seven at the Red Pattillo Center in Study Butte, all from 7 to 7.
Our area has managed to remain wildland-fire-free in spite the exceptional drought in some areas, but some have smelled smoke lately coming from more than 500 miles away.
Fort Davis Fire Marshal Roy Hurley posted on Facebook Thursday that some had reported a smell of smoke in the Davis Mountains. Some in Marfa also reported smelling smoke.
It came from fires in New Mexico near Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
Radar has spotted rainstorms in our area, some severe and even including tornadoes, in the last week but at least most of Alpine has stayed dry.

El jefe de bomberos de Fort Davis, Roy Hurley, publicó en Facebook el jueves que algunos habían informado un olor a humo en las montañas Davis. Algunos en Marfa también informaron haber olido humo.
