Good evening, today is Thursday, May 4th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Saturday is election day in Alpine but most will not have a candidate to select because they are not in the one district with a truly competitive race.
District Six seat for the Alpine Independent School District now held by incumbent Dr. Adrian Billings is contested by Richard Portillo. Joe Portillo is unopposed for his District Two seat.
Two candidates have applied for the Ward 5 seat on the Alpine City Council but incumbent Jerry Johnson died March 20.
It was after the ballots were printed and the state has ruled his name must still be on the ballot.
If Johnson should win, the city would have to declare the seat vacant and appoint someone to serve until the next election in May, 2024.
Challenger Rick Stephens served in that seat but was term limited after three terms and could not run two years ago but can now run again.
Two other races are on the ballot but they clearly are unopposed.
Judy Stokes filed for her Ward 1 seat and Darren Nance filed for Sarah Tandy’s Ward 3. She did not run for re-election.
The city election will be in the City Council Chambers at 803 West Holland Avenue and the school election will be next door in the Civic Center.
Friday is May 5, or as it’s known south of the border, Cinco de Mayo. That is a holiday in Mexico but it’s also observed north of the border.
It marks the victory over a much larger French Army at Puebla east of Mexico City in 1862 which reaffirmed Mexican national independence against a French effort to colonize it.
In Alpine, several events mark the date but the highlight is the annual parade at noon Saturday from the Civic Center next to City Hall along Holland Avenue to Cockrell Street.
Organizer Mary Ann Lujan said it will line-up at 11:15 behind the Civic Center. Grand Marshall will be Miss West Texas Latina Jaiden Portillo.
Meanwhile, vendors will line up at the Grand Mercado at 105 East Murphy Street all afternoon, including a car show.
Other activities in the area include the Nueva Generacion Grupo Folklorica at 1 Saturday at the Terlingua School, Folklorico Dancers at Marfa Schools at 2 and Loteria Bingo from 3 to 5.
La Mariachi Cuellar will be at 3, Meet and Greet Miss West Texas Latina at 5 , Puro Party All Starz at 5:30, Mystic Gitanas at 7:30 and J.R. Gomez Conjunto Bandits at 8.
Then the Alpine Humane Society will host a Salsa de Mayo Salsa recipe contest and fundraiser at the Granada Theatre from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday with music, a silent auction and more.
Those who want to prove their salsa is the best will only have to register and bring their salsa to see if the judges agree. Chips already will be provided.
Backers said their silent auction will include a mix of fun, fancy, useful and cool items.

Events start Friday when the Bid Bend Chorale will present the concert with performance by the Big Bend Childrens’ Chorus and Big Bend Vicace Youth at 7:30.
It will be directed by Sul Ross Choir Director Andrew Alegria, Children’s Youth Directors Noelle Karleen and Amber Rutledge and accompanied by Beth Kerzee.
Proceeds from the concessions and a silent auction will benefit the Theatre of the Big Bend through the Big Bend Arts Council. The concert itself is free.

El asiento del Distrito Seis para el Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine ahora en manos del actual Dr. Adrian Billings es disputado por Richard Portillo. Joe Portillo no tiene oposición para su escaño en el Distrito Dos.
Dos candidatos solicitaron el puesto del Distrito 5 en el Concejo Municipal de Alpine, pero el titular Jerry Johnson murió el 20 de marzo.
Fue después de que se imprimieron las boletas y el estado dictaminó que su nombre aún debe estar en la boleta.
Si Johnson gana, la ciudad tendrá que declarar el puesto vacante y nombrar a alguien para servir hasta las próximas elecciones en mayo de 2024.
El retador Rick Stephens ocupó ese puesto, pero su mandato fue limitado después de tres mandatos y no pudo postularse hace dos años, pero ahora puede postularse nuevamente.

En Alpine, varios eventos marcan la fecha, pero lo más destacado es el desfile anual del sábado al mediodía desde el Centro Cívico junto al Ayuntamiento a lo largo de Holland Avenue hasta Cockrell Street.
