May 4th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Wednesday, May 4th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

A large section of downtown Marfa, including the Paisano Hotel and Presidio County Courthouse have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Register lists the nation’s most worthy places for preservation.

The district is known nationally in connection with artist Donald Judd, whose work led to the city’s identification as a destination for art tourism, particularly minimalism.

The National Register is part of a federal program to coordinate and support efforts to protect the country’s historic and architectural resources.

Brewster County Deputies and U.S. Border Patrol agents coordinated efforts in another bust south of Marathon Tuesday night when six illegal migrants tried to go around the checkpoint.

Deputies stopped the smuggling vehicle and arrested the driver, Jose Luis Sanchez Garcia.

Another deputy and Border Patrol agents caught up with the migrants who had been dropped off to attempt to circumvent the checkpoint.

Sanchez was charged with six counts of smuggling of persons and driving with an invalid license.

The migrants were referred to the Border Patrol for processing and deportation.

The City of Alpine is inviting residents to this year’s Spring Community Clean-up Weekend from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily May 27 through 29 or until containers are full.

Citizens can bring waste to the Hal Flanders Recycling Center at 305 Cemetery Road in Alpine throughout that weekend.

Bulk items include appliances, furniture, mattresses, large plastic toys, water heaters, refrigerators and freezers.

Refrigerators and air conditioners will only be accepted if the freon has been removed by a licensed technician with a sticker attached.

The recycling center also will accept scrap metal, tree limbs, tires and the usual recyclable material from residential sources only.

For more information, contact the Environmental Services Department at 294-3183 or email environmental.services@ci.alpine.tx.us.

The Alpine Ambassadors are planning three more ribbon cuttings this weekend.

Alpine Wine at 116 North 5th Street will have two ribbon cuttings at 5:30 p.m. Friday, one for the wine shop and the other for the Alpine Bed and Breakfast at 403 North 8th Street.

Tom and Sharon Kelner own both establishments and both ribbon cuttings will be at the wine shop.

The wine bar offers wine tastings, flights, glasses and bottles in addition to craft beer and soft drinks. Live music also is presented.

And the food truck at the corner of Holland and 5th Streets will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

That had been a Thai food truck for a few years but Ryan and Vanessa Kincade bought it and Catryna Rodriguez has agreed to operate the food truck.

Efforts will be made to keep the activity from blocking two of the city’s original murals east and north of the lot.

Rodriguez said a Frontier CASA benefit Corn Hole Tournament will be included, starting 1 p.m. for 50 dollars per team. Contact Alex Rodriguez at 294-0484.

CASA stands for Citizens Court Appointed Special Advocates and it is a volunteer group supporting children in the legal system.

Rodriguez said she will offer American food and would like to concentrate on Southern Comfort foods like meat loaf, fried foods, casseroles and the like.

But this weekend they will concentrate on traditional Tex-Mex food.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
