Good evening, today is Wednesday, May 3rd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Alpine Independent School District has partnered with the Permian Basin Area Foundation to launch a school foundation to raise money for a variety of projects.
The Permian Basin Foundation supports critical projects across the district to help provide students with a variety of resources, programs, facilities and more.
Current programs include Angel Meals Account payoff, End-of-Year Staff Appreciation, school supplies, summer camps, weight room renovations and a Volleyball Net system.
Currently, the Permian Basin Area Foundation has helped fully fund the Alpine Elementary Library Renovation and the Read Alpine project.
The library renovation will bring the library up to date, including new collections of books, interactive learning stations, reading nooks and kid-friendly furniture.
The Read Alpine project will coordinate local volunteers to read to classes at Alpine Elementary and the new Child Care Center on a monthly basis.
Funds will be used to coordinate volunteers, purchase books for the events and take-home books for the students at the school and at the Child Care Center.
Donations can be made two ways. The first is online at alpine.esc18.net/foundation, where you can view and follow the instructions to donate to a certain project.
The second is directly to the district by contacting Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart at mrinehart@alpineisd.net or calling 837-7700 to arrange a donation.
Area law enforcement continues to interrupt smuggling attempts in the area, instances of both human smuggling and items, particularly drugs.
A Brewster County Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a speeding motorist west of Marathon Tuesday afternoon.
The driver, identified as Oswaldo Hinojos Caballero, was found to be operating the vehicle with a suspended license.
Further investigation revealed about five pounds of cocaine concealed on his person.
Caballero was booked into the Brewster County Jail for manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group one.
The day before, Brewster County Deputy attempted a traffic stop north of Marathon and the driver, identified as Alejandro Zamora Renteria, refused to stop for about 25 miles.
Renteria finally pulled off the roadway and stopped and all occupants fled on foot but Renteria was quickly apprehended, along with one illegal migrant, from Mexico.
Renteria will face charges of evading arrest with a vehicle, evading arrest on foot and resisting arrest and then referred to the U.S. Border Patrol as an illegal entrant.
The other illegal immigrant was referred directly to Border Patrol for processing.
Also on Monday, a Brewster County deputy and police dog Latek helped federal agencies stop criminal activity aboard an eastbound Amtrak train.
Fugitive passenger John Winston Harris had an outstanding warrant from Houston for robbery and the K9 also alerted to the odor of narcotics in his luggage.
A search uncovered nine ounces of marijuana and 13 grams of T.H.C. vaping oil.
Harris was booked into the Brewster County Jail for the felony warrant and felony possession charges.
The Alpine Humane Society will host a Salsa de Mayo Salsa recipe contest and fundraiser at the Granada Theatre from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday with music, a silent auction and more.
Those who want to prove their salsa is the best will only have to register and bring their salsa to see if the judges agree. Chips already will be provided.
The Alpine Humane Society said their silent auction will include a mix of fun, fancy, useful and cool items.
