May 3rd

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Tuesday, May 3rd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

The family of Patricia Shely Martin of Marathon will host a celebration of life at her home in Marathon from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 14.

Her ashes will be scattered at the family ranch in a private ceremony.

Pat, a retired rancher, passed away peacefully at home Saturday.

She and husband Biddy were inducted into the Big Bend Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2005.

Her family members were sheep ranchers in Brewster County on land they owned since 1906.

Pat served as treasurer of the Marathon Cemetery Association and on the Marathon school board.

She was an avid participant in the annual M-2-M race and walked most days of the year to prepare for its 5-K.

Her husband and only brother preceded her in death. Surviving are three children, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter.

In lieu of floral arrangements, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Marathon Library.

Online condolences may be left at alpinememorialfuneralhome.com.

Alpine Police posted on their Facebook this week a story about cleaning up graffiti under a Highway 223 “Loop Road” bridge.

Another problem showed up Tuesday morning on the west side of the Patti Hildreth Building at Murphy and 7th Streets.

One read “A.P.D. Suck,” another said “Marijuana 4 sale” with a “Q” instead of a “J” in Marijuana and a third read “300 W.A.G. ask Jimmy.”

Another message across the street had been painted over before we got there and we could not read it.

Assistant Police Chief Felipe Fierro said crews have erased the graffiti but the perpetrators have not been identified.

Anyone with information about the crime is urged to call Alpine Police at 837-3486.

Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dotson posted on Facebook Tuesday that his department has received information of suspicious activity involving short term rentals in the area.

One involved a single night rental for a small number of people that was then then used for a large group and access was illegally obtained for multiple consecutive nights.

Evidence suggests these rentals are being used by smugglers to stash migrants before traveling further north.

The post asks owners, employees, caretakers or managers for a hotel or short-term rental to notice any suspicious activity.

That could include windows left unlocked, large groups of people and third-party reservations, among others.

Contact the Sheriff’s Office at 837-3488 or 911 for emergencies and make sure all keys have been returned and keypad access codes have been changed.

Tuesday was the last day of early voting for the May 7 city, school and Constitutional Amendment elections but those who missed out still have a chance on Election Day Saturday.

City voters will have one race, between Catherine Eaves and Amit Rangra for mayor. Vote in the City Council Chamber.

The Alpine School has one race for District 7 voters between Mary McCallister and Elpidia Lujan in the Civic Center next door.

And all county voters will have two constitutional amendments, both aimed at lowering the cost of school taxes. This will be at the Beard Office Complex west of the Courthouse.

The runoff for state and national races will be May 24.

Brewster County Republican Chair Monica McBride reports the four candidates for Brewster County judge will be at a meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Republicans Ryan Skelton and Greg Henington and Democrats Mimi Smith and Oscar Cobos will be in their respective runoff elections May 24.

They will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Alpine School District auditorium in the Administration Building at 704 West Sul Ross Avenue.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
