Sul Ross State University has earned a gold medal by Exercise is Medicine for its efforts to create a culture of wellness on campus.
It is one of 149 universities and colleges to be honored overall and only one of 73 that can be called gold medalists.
That select group will be officially recognized on June 1 as part of the Exercise is Medicine World Congress at the American College of Sports Medicine’s Annual Meeting.
Exercise in Medicine calls upon universities and colleges to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health.
It encourages faculty, staff and students to work together to improve the health and well-being of the campus community.

Runners and fans of the Alpine 06 Cowboys can still purchase tickets for the Home Run 5- and 10-Kilometer races on May 27 at Kokernot Field.
In-Person signup will be the day before the race from 5 to 6 at Kokernot Field and the day of the race from 8 to 9.
At 9, the ten-kilometer race will start followed by the five-kilometer race at 9:15. Two water stops will be available for the 5K route and three for the 10K route.
The race itself will start at the Kokernot Baseball Field on East Hendryx Avenue or “Loop Road” with a right turn at East Sul Ross Avenue to 5th Street, then back to the field on East Hendryx.
Board member and secretary of the Alpine Cowboys Katie Hector said the Cowboys will be there to provide water and cheer on the fans before their inter-squad game.
Katie Hector: “I feel like it’s a nice switch in roles. The Alpine Cowboys get to be your fans if you’re running the race, whether it’s your first 5-K or you run it all the time, the Cowboys are rooting for you at that point.”
The Brick Vault Brewery is a sponsor and will serve a special “Cowboy Blonde” craft beer for runners right after the race is complete.
It also is sponsored by Porters, Off the Wheel Pottery, Alpine Fitness and the Big Bend Little League.
Hector said for the first time this year the Big Bend Little League will participate in the celebrations.
Katie Hector: “They were having their closing ceremonies on that same day and we said, ‘Hey come over to Kokernot why don’t ya’ll do your closing ceremonies.”
The Big Bend Little League ceremony will have players and coaches entering the field to be presented alongside this year’s Alpine Cowboys.
A Fun Run for kids will follow the event where children will run with baseball players around the outside loop in Kokernot field and finish at home plate before the Cowboys game.

Jeff Davis County Commissioners have appointed Glen Eisen as the new county attorney to fill the unexpired term of Teresa Todd, who has officially retired.
Todd retired from the post in February, saying she was recovering after an arrest for driving while intoxicated.
County Judge Curtis Evans told the Big Bend Sentinel Eisen will help commissioners keep up with general business, maintaining compliance and much more.
Eisen moved to Jeff Davis County in 2020 from Houston where his law practice focused mostly on tax controversy and other taxing issues.
He holds a master’s degree in business administration in addition to his law license.
