A Colorado man was sentenced in a federal court in Alpine to 240 months in prison for distributing fentanyl to a Texas resident.
According to the Western District of Texas for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Douglas Christopher Steele, mailed an Alpine resident 20 fentanyl pills in February 2024. Through text message exchanges, Steele and the man discussed how strong the fentanyl was, and the Alpine resident later messaged Steele telling him that he nearly overdosed. Later that morning, the man was found unresponsive in the restroom at his place of work. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
An investigation revealed envelopes of fentanyl pills at the man’s residence that had been mailed from Steele’s Colorado residence. Investigators also found the cell phone messages between the man and Steele.
Steele was indicted in May of last year in Pecos for two counts related to fentanyl distribution and was arrested in Denver on May 11. He pleaded guilty on Nov. 18, 2024.

As we head into the weekend, forecasters with the National Weather Service say there’s another slight risk of severe thunderstorms across the region.
Any severe storms that do develop in the next couple of days will be accompanied by large hail and possibly damaging winds.
Forecasters say to be mindful of the weather conditions when traveling.

Kevin W. Badgett has been appointed as the new Dean of Education for Sul Ross State University, starting July 1.
In a press release announcing the appointment, Badgett said he’s excited to be part of Sul Ross and is looking forward to partnering with people across the university and the wider Big Bend community.

Community members are hosting a Centennial School reunion in Alpine the first week of July.
Centennial School, like Blackwell in Marfa, was one of the many de facto segregated schools across the Southwest where Hispanic children were taught.
The three-day reunion begins on Thursday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at the school, located at 500 West Avenue H. Registration for the event will also take place at that time.
Other events include a parade down Holland Avenue, a nighttime dance at the Alpine Civic Center, and a night of tejano music.

Un hombre de Colorado fue sentenciado en un tribunal federal en Alpine a 240 meses de prisión por distribuir fentanilo a un residente de Texas.
Según la Fiscalía Federal del Distrito Oeste de Texas, Douglas Christopher Steele envió por correo 20 pastillas de fentanilo a un residente de Alpine en febrero de 2024. Mediante mensajes de texto, Steele y el hombre hablaron sobre la potencia del fentanilo, y el residente de Alpine le envió un mensaje a Steele diciéndole que casi sufrió una sobredosis. Esa misma mañana, el hombre fue encontrado inconsciente en el baño de su trabajo. Fue declarado muerto en un hospital cercano.
Una investigación reveló sobres con pastillas de fentanilo en la residencia del hombre, enviados por correo desde la residencia de Steele en Colorado. Los investigadores también encontraron los mensajes de celular entre el hombre y Steele.
Steele fue acusado en mayo del año pasado en Pecos por dos cargos relacionados con la distribución de fentanilo y fue arrestado en Denver el 11 de mayo. Se declaró culpable el 18 de noviembre de 2024.
