During today’s county commissioner’s meeting, local officials discussed the potential threat the “screwworm fly” poses to the Texas cattle industry.
Commissioner Mo Morrow said the parasitic fly, which embeds its larvae into the living flesh of animals and humans, wreaked havoc on the state decades ago.
It was mentioned that The problem with them is they affect all wildlife and all livestock. // And it’s a hideous deal, and it’s changed how people ran their livestock.
Morrow says the fly is within 300 miles of Texas. Top Texas lawmakers are trying to fund a facility that would stop the fly from spreading further.
During Tuesday’s meeting, commissioners also received an update from the Big Bend Public Library in south county.
Dale Weis is a volunteer with the library, he told commissioners there’s an appetite and demand for what the library provides, which includes things like digital services and printing and internet.
He mentioned how it becomes not just books, which is important, but sort of a little bit of everything, and some of the numbers, they have 1,100 books approximately cataloged and available for the shelves. It’s unfit in the toy hauler, but they curate as best we can. Another 1,000 books on deck, ready to be cataloged. The volunteer group is from BBCA, the Big Bend Citizens Alliance. At any given time, there’s 10, 15 of us that can be available to help with different library activities.
During Tuesday’s meeting, commissioners also voted to extend the county’s burn ban. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the region remains under “exceptional drought” conditions.

Hospital officials say they have a greeter who will ask about your vaccine status and offer a mask. If you’re unvaccinated or unsure about your vaccination status, the hospital encourages you to wear a mask while in the facility, whether you’re seeking treatment or visiting a patient.
If you have been exposed to someone with measles or suspect you may have measles, you can call either the emergency room at 432-837-0209 or the clinic at 432-837-0430 before entering the building so precautions can be taken.

This summer, the art gallery Ballroom Marfa will open a new exhibit called “Los Encuentros” – it’s a collection of work by several artists focusing on the “elevation of materials from everyday life.”
The exhibition’s artists work in combining various art styles – from painting and sculpture to installation.
The opening reception for “Los Encuentros” is July 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. Ballroom Marfa is located at 108 E. San Antonio St.

Fort Davis is gearing up for their Fourth of July celebration — and as part of the annual event, they’re also hosting the “Coolest 5K in Texas” race.
The race, which benefits the Fort Davis Higher Education Foundation, will be on Friday, July 4, at the Jeff Davis County Park. You can pick up your packet the morning of the race, any time between 7:15 and 7:45. The 1K fun run starts at 8, and the full 5K race begins at 8:30.
