Fire crews were still on the scene Monday of Sunday’s big fire that destroyed a large section of West Holland Avenue, cleaning up and looking for hot spots.
One of the worst fires Alpine has seen started about 3:30 Sunday afternoon and by early evening had spread to most of the 100 block of East Holland Avenue in the heart of downtown.
Police Chief Darrell Losoya told us it started behind the art galleries and was contained early on but neighbors said it got to a grease pit behind Judy’s Bread and Breakfast and really ignited.
It later got under the roof and really spread from there.
Fire Chief Andrew Pearce said the first call was from 115 West Holland Avenue, which is the address for the Gallery on the Square.
We heard later that it was destroyed but the CatchLight Gallery next door was not as severely damaged.
Buildings at the corners of 5 th and 6 th Streets survived much of the inferno and the Hospital District Office two doors west of 5 th was saved.
By about 8 Sunday evening, the fire was contained to the already damaged structures and was not spreading but it continued to burn into the evening and beyond.
The Alpine Volunteer Fire Department got help from firefighters from Marathon, Marfa and Fort Davis, as well as fire crews from the Texas Forest Service.
One firefighter was transported to Big Bend Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Javelina’s Gift Shop on West Holland Avenue plans a V.I.P Event this week to collect donations for Holland Avenue businesses damaged or destroyed by Sunday’s big fire.
A Facebook note from store owner Jennifer Harrod referred to what she called a big portion of our downtown that was lost to the fire.
Our friends and neighbors have lost their property, their livelihoods and their businesses, she wrote.
She told us they plan to bring people together and raise money to benefit those that lost everything.
At the time, three musical groups had offered to provide entertainment at no cost and others could also ask to participate.
The event will be at the store a block east of the mayhem in the former Guzzy Up Pizzeria from 5 to 9 Wednesday evening or longer if some desire.
Harrod said more details will be posted as they get settled and she said she would do a press release to get the word out.
For now, she asked us to please keep these people and the firefighters in our thoughts and asked everyone to be safe.
The city of Alpine water and sewer questionnaire all citizens were asked to complete is due Friday.
The Environmental Protection Agency and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality have required all cities to inventory the water lines and services within their systems.
This includes both customer and city-owned lines. The survey was designed to answer critical questions.
It can be found on the city’s website at City of Alpine-dot-com and you may print it and return the completed form to City Hall at 100 North 13 th Street in Alpine.

The next Open Weekend at the Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserved with overnight camping is June 14 to 16. No reservations are required.
And the next guided tour of the Preserve will be on Friday, June 21.
