May 26th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Friday, May 26th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

Memorial Day observance is Monday and the Big Bend Area Law Enforcement Officers Association will have its annual memorial service on the campus of Sul Ross State University.

The ceremony honoring those who have given the last full measure of devotion will be at 10 Wednesday morning, on the original date for the holiday.

Texas D.P.S. West Texas Regional Director Jose “Joe” A. Sanchez will be the Master of Ceremonies.

The presentation of colors, firing of the three volleys, the playing of taps and a flag-folding ceremony are all part of the event.

This year’s color guard and honor guard will be made up of officers from several area law enforcement agencies.

The U.S. Border Patrol will furnish a pipe and drum corps and the Midland County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol will feature the traditional riderless horse.

To attend, email landon.r.hutchens@cbp.dhs.gov or call 202/407-4241.

The Smoke in the Mountains Barbeque and Ribeye Shootout will continue this year at the courthouse in Fort Davis June 9 and 10, starting at noon both days.

The competition also is recognized as a sanctioned event by the Champion B.B.Q. alliance with entries in Margaritas, Salsa, Ribeye, Chicken, Ribs, Dessert and Cabrito.

Smoke in the Mountains President Jennifer Webster said the sanctioned event status ensured the 60 spots for the competition that filled up within a month.

Webster: “So the legislature has to vote on it, you have to get it signed, there’s a proclamation, it’s kind of a really big deal. It is recognized as a true sanctioned event and it really is drawing a lot of professional barbeque teams to come.”

Smoke in the Mountains began in 2012 by Sara Adams after the Rock House fire in Fort Davis and it continued for three years before Adams passed away.

Webster: “I went to her husband Jodie and said, ‘Hey I’d love to bring it back and the community needs something new. Let’s go for it. He gave us my blessing and from there we started a board and we’ve just taken off and been working on this event for a year actually.”

The main prize this year will be the “overall overall” which will go to the team that gathers the most points overall, winning $500 and a wooden statue from Doug Moreland.

There also will be a silent auction, cornhole tournament, music and raffles.

A taste for tips B.B.Q. trailer, which can only be paid by tips, will go the Fort Davis National Honor Society with the rest of the money going to the first responders in Jeff Davis County.

We get frequent reports of smuggling of drugs and migrants intercepted by area law enforcement but Presidio County Sheriff’s Office said they are cracking down on smuggling of livestock.

Several subjects have been arrested and charged after admitting to importing horses and cattle through the Rio Grande instead of following proper procedures through the port of entry.

Deputies will detain any livestock suspected of illegal importation and refer the case to the United States Department of Agriculture.

The USDA will then do a veterinary inspection and require proof of ownership before returning the livestock.

Those illegally smuggling livestock will be referred to Homeland Security Investigations for processing and federal prosecution.

Another two livestock trailers carrying Mexican livestock were detained by Sheriff’s Deputies this week and the drivers were arrested by federal officials.

Alpine Police Chief Darrell Losoya posted on Facebook this week that its first annual Memorial Day blood drive was a huge success.

Losoya said the community, in his words, “never ceases to amaze me when it comes to giving to others.”

He said they received 27 donations in four hours.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
