The Alpine Community Projects committee Wednesday heard a detailed report on what it would take to have elder-care facilities in Alpine for the first time in a dozen years.
P.M.D. Advisory Services officials made a Zoom presentation on prospects for skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in Alpine.
The Big Bend Regional Medical Hospital District is helping Community Projects prepare a plan to provide the services.
The market feasibility study of the use of an Alpine Green House residential facility reported that the largest-growing age group in the study area is those 85 and older.
That group is expected to triple in size in the three-county area within 60 miles of Alpine in the next 20 years while all other age groups will be basically unchanged.
Michael Starke, who was the major presenter, said a next step would get a fundraiser to cover costs and Projects President Kirsten Moody asked what else the organization could do.
Kathleen Goff from The Green House Project suggested she contact other small communities to see how they handled it and mentioned Sheridan, Wyoming, and two in Washington State.
Alpine has been without any kind of elder care since 2011. A project about five years ago stalled because of a lack of funding.
With schools coming to a close for summer break, the Alpine Public Library offers its summer programming for kids and teens.
The library will begin with a family night every first Saturday of the month with Family Mathematics Night as the first event on June 3.
Kids’ librarian Mary Beth Garrett said this year the Kids United program “Better Together” will have an underlying theme throughout the different events.
Garret: “Better together is all about unity, finding solidarity, working and playing together, community and cohesiveness and connection, all the programs relate to that.”
This year, the Bean Stack program will continue, allowing kids to log the amount of reading they do for a variety of prizes.
Garret: “What’s fun about this is the kids can stay motivated with the gaming features that are on this platform and some of the new social features. You can add friends, challenge each other, create streaks.”
Students will earn badges as they complete reading goals and Gumslingers is offering sweet treat bags for meeting goals.
Those who finish the program will be offered an equine experience exercising and grooming horses led by Dr. Laura Das Neves Patterson of Sul Ross.
The library also will have many events and programs like teen Mario Kart tournaments, 3-D printing classes, toddler time and more.

The Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce has announced the next family barn dance with live music by fiddler Doug Moreland at 7 p.m. Friday at the Kelly Pavilion in Fort Davis
The event will run until 10 p.m. to start off Memorial Day weekend. Although it is free, donations are suggested.

The Alpine Volunteer Fire Department has reported on Facebook that more gear has come in from volunteer donations.
The post thanks all donors including the American Legion and Lions Club of America.
This equipment is used during structure fires, rescues, vehicle extrication and much more, making them a huge asset for firefighters.
