Good evening, today is Monday, May 23rd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
A private memorial for Suzanne B. Dungan of Marfa will be scheduled at a later date.
She died Monday, May 16, at Del Sol Medical Center in El Paso at age 78 after a brief illness with three children by her side.
Suzanne was born in Columbus, Ohio, on November 1, 1943.
Her professional career included owning a travel agency where she coordinated the opening of the Lajitas Resort during a rare snowstorm.
Suzanne also included being an art consultant and collector and owning a concrete flooring business.
When they moved to Marfa, Tom and Suzanne continued their support of the Chinati Foundation and she curated an historic show at Ballroom Marfa.
Her civic duties included volunteering in Marfa schools and a variety of environmental and social causes.
Her husband of 44 years, Thomas Dungan, preceded her in death. Surviving are three children, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The family suggests donations be made to the Audubon Society in her name.
From May 29 to June 1, a team of biologists and resource staff will be applying herbicide to control non-native giant cane in the Rio Grande Village area of Big Bend National Park.
For 48 hours no one will be allowed to enter the project area located along the river corridor from Daniel’s Ranch to the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail.
The herbicide Imazapyr will be applied to resprouts of the invasive cane Arundo Donax as a follow-up treatment to the prescribed burn that happened in April.
Giant cane is an aggressive non-native grass that over the decades has made the Rio Grande increasingly channelized as invasive giant cane forms dense thickets and traps sediment.
With the removal of this cane, the Rio Grande can better transport sediment downstream, opening up gravel bars and wider floodplains.
This benefits native plants like willows and wildlife such as freshwater mussels, fish, and beaver. Removing thickets of giant cane also opens the banks of the river for recreational use.

Our Lady of Peace Church and the Matachines “Danza Guadalup” announced this year’s Alpine Multicultural Festival slated for June 11 and 12 at Kokernot Park.
The festival will have games for kids, pinatas, live music, family events, ethnic foods and dancing performances throughout the weekend highlighting different cultural backgrounds.
The Festival will begin June 11 at 10:30 a.m. with the first ever multicultural parade starting at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and ending at Kokernot Park.
The parade theme is cultural traditions and float prizes will be given with fist place receiving 300-dollars, second place receiving 200-dollars and third place receiving 100 dollars.
An opening ceremony by the Matachines at noon will kick off performances throughout the entire day ending with a “balloons for peace” celebration at midnight.
June 12 will have performances and more from 11 a.m. to 9:40 closing with a Jerusalema Dance and balloons for peace.

The City of Alpine is inviting residents to this year’s Spring Community Clean-up Weekend from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily Friday through Saturday or until containers are full.
Citizens can bring waste to the Hal Flanders Recycling Center at 305 Cemetery Road in Alpine throughout this weekend.
Bulk items include appliances, furniture, mattresses, large plastic toys, water heaters, refrigerators and freezers.
Refrigerators and air conditioners will only be accepted if the freon has been removed by a licensed technician with a sticker attached.
The recycling center also will accept scrap metal, tree limbs, tires and the usual recyclable material from residential sources only.

La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Paz y los Matachines “Danza Guadalup” anunciaron el Festival Multicultural de Alpine de este año programado para el 11 y 12 de junio en el Parque Kokernot.

El Festival comenzará el 11 de junio a las 10:30 a. m. con el primer desfile multicultural que comenzará en la Iglesia Católica de Nuestra Señora de la Paz y terminará en el Parque Kokernot.
El tema del desfile son las tradiciones culturales y se entregarán premios de carrozas. El primer lugar recibirá 300 dólares, el segundo lugar recibirá 200 dólares y el tercer lugar recibirá 100 dólares.
Una ceremonia de apertura a cargo de los Matachines al mediodía dará inicio a las actuaciones durante todo el día y terminará con una celebración de “globos por la paz” a la medianoche.
El 12 de junio habrá actuaciones y más desde las 11 a. m. hasta las 9:40 a. m., cerrando con una Danza Jerusalema y globos por la paz.
