The Texas Forest Service posted Wednesday that as Memorial Day unofficially kicks off summer this weekend, Texans should prepare for wildfires.
It said the potential for wildfires will be limited to the Trans Pecos and western High Plains regions of the state this weekend.
Hot and dry conditions will dry vegetation in these areas and elevated fire weather may support the ignition of small fires.
Nine out of ten wildfires are caused by humans and are preventable and the Forest Service offers some tips to help prevent wildfires.
Always check with local officials for burn bans and other outdoor burning restrictions.
Pay attention to local guidelines regarding open fires, campfires and outdoor activities that may pose a fire hazard.
Never leave your grill unattended. Wind gusts may blow embers into dry vegetation, potentially starting a wildfire.

The Alpine City Council, in a closed-door executive session after the main agenda Tuesday, awarded a five-percent pay raise for City Secretary Geo Calderon.
He earlier declined the raise so he could get some new software so it was just re-awarded.
Several councilors have praised the work Calderon has done for the city.
In open session, the Council unanimously voted to accept Elizabeth Lewis of Marathon as municipal court judge. She was immediately sworn in by Secretary Calderon.
The Council also unanimously approved the appointments of new Councilor Eva Olivas as a member of the Family Crisis Center and the Library Boards.
She replaces Judy Stokes on the Crisis Center and Martin Sandate on the Library Board. They did not run for re-election.
Councilor Rick Stephens was unanimously elected to the Brewster County liaison to replace Stokes.
And City Manager Megan Antrim announced that June 6 is the last day to protest state and local property taxes.
To protest, you will need to fill out the proper paperwork.

The City has posted on its website that the next monthly bulk pick up will be in the week of Monday, June 3.
Residents must schedule their pickup with Texas Disposal Systems the week prior.
Pickups may be scheduled from May 27 to before noon on May 31.
To schedule a pickup, call Texas Disposal Systems at 837-0845. Once the pick-up has been scheduled, place your bulk items on the curb or right of way directly in front of your home.
Do not put anything onto the roadway, in an alley or next to a dumpster.

The Alpine Police Department will have its next public auction of abandoned vehicles at 10 Saturday morning, June 8, next to the Hal Flanders Recycling Center on Cemetery Road.
Viewing of the vehicles before the sale will be from 9 that morning until the auction begins.
Lienholders or owners of the vehicles will be able to reclaim them within 20 days of this notice, which appeared in the May 16 edition of the Alpine Avalanche.
To reclaim, pay the charges, including towing, servicing or repair of the vehicle while in storage.
Failure to do so will be considered as a waiver of any rights involving that vehicle.
The newspaper notice lists 18 vehicles currently being held from a horse trailer to cars and trucks from 1992 to 2014 Models. See the list with the announcement on Page 8 of the May 16 Alpine Avalanche.

El Concejo Municipal de Alpine, en una sesión ejecutiva a puertas cerradas después de la agenda principal del martes, otorgó un aumento salarial del cinco por ciento al Secretario Municipal Geo Calderón.
Anteriormente rechazó el aumento para poder obtener algún software nuevo, por lo que simplemente se lo volvieron a otorgar.
Varios concejales han elogiado el trabajo que Calderón ha hecho por la ciudad.
En sesión abierta, el Consejo votó unánimemente a favor de aceptar a Elizabeth Lewis de Marathon como jueza del tribunal municipal. Inmediatamente fue juramentada por el Secretario Calderón.
El Consejo también aprobó por unanimidad los nombramientos de la nueva concejal Eva Olivas como miembro del Centro de Crisis Familiar y de las Juntas de la Biblioteca.
Reemplaza a Judy Stokes en el Centro de Crisis y a Martin Sandate en la Junta de la Biblioteca. No se presentaron a la reelección.
El concejal Rick Stephens fue elegido por unanimidad como enlace del condado de Brewster para reemplazar a Stokes.
Y la administradora municipal, Megan Antrim, anunció que el 6 de junio es el último día para protestar contra los impuestos estatales y locales a la propiedad.

El Departamento de Policía de Alpine realizará su próxima subasta pública de vehículos abandonados a las 10 de la mañana del sábado 8 de junio, junto al Centro de Reciclaje Hal Flanders en Cemetery Road.
La visualización de los vehículos antes de la venta será desde las 9 de la mañana hasta que comience la subasta.
