A listener sent us a quick picture of what looked like a small tornado near the Cowboy Church east of Alpine Wednesday afternoon.
The weather bureau said it had reports of what it called land spouts near Fort Stockton and there were reports of some weak tornados possible in our area.
They promised to put any confirmed reports of tornado or severe weather sighting on their alert lines.
The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute has announced that Nicole Dickan and Elle Sutherland have won the 2024 James F. Scudday Scholarships.
The one-thousand-dollar grants are offered annually to graduate students conducting research in the Chihuahuan Desert region with preference for vertebrate biology.
Dickan is a Graduate Research Assistant at Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross State University where she is conducting research on black bear ecology in the Trans-Pecos region.
Before her current research, she worked with a wide range of species, including grizzly bears, bobcats and bighorn sheep.
This is Sutherland’s second Scudday Scholarship.
She is working toward her Master of Science in Range and Wildlife Management at B.M.I. with an expected graduation date of May, 2025.
Sutherland’s research is based on space use and competition in desert bighorn sheep.
The Scholarship Namesake had a Ph.D. and was a C.D.R.I. co-founder and longtime professor of biology at Sul Ross.
Upon his retirement in 1995, he was named a Distinguished Professor Emeritus by the Board of Regents of the Texas State University System, the board’s highest honor for retired educators.
The Dr. James F. Scudday C.D.R.I. Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 in recognition of Dr. Scudday’s many contributions to the field and his passion for teaching.
These scholarships are but one way C.D.R.I. fulfills its commitment to nature-based education and the support of research in the Chihuahuan Desert region.
And C.D.R.I. welcomes two new Directors, Rick Gupman and Julie Webb.
Gupman is the Deputy Superintendent at Big Bend National Park and works on his weekend cabin in the Davis Mountains when he can find some spare time.
He volunteers at C.D.R.I and has become a valuable help behind the scenes at C.D.R.I.’s events since 2022.
Webb and her husband, Bruce, own Webb’;s Fair and Square Gallery in the restored Masonic Lodge in Fort Davis.
Julie has volunteered at C.D.R.I. for nearly two years, working in the garden as well as introducing visiting out-of-town friends to the site.
Registration is open for the summer session of G.E.D. classes at Alpine Public Library.
Orientation will be Thursday next week with classes starting Monday, May 13. G.E.D. classes will be Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Tras su jubilación en 1995, la Junta de Regentes del Sistema Universitario Estatal de Texas lo nombró Profesor Emérito Distinguido, el más alto honor de la junta para los educadores jubilados.
El Fondo de Becas Dr. James F. Scudday C.D.R.I. se estableció en el 2010 en reconocimiento a las numerosas contribuciones del Dr. Scudday al campo y su pasión por la enseñanza.
Estas becas son solo una forma de que C.D.R.I. cumple con su compromiso con la educación basada en la naturaleza y el apoyo a la investigación en la región del Desierto Chihuahuense.
