Good evening, today is Thursday, May 18th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Services will be Saturday for Juan Anaya Chavez Junior of Alpine who died Friday at Pecos County Memorial Hospital in Fort Stockton at the age of 91.
Praying of the Most Holy Rosary will be at 9:30 Saturday at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with services to follow at 10.
Juan was born on July 29, 1931, in Terlingua where he lived until his teenage years when the family moved to Alpine.
Here, he worked in the construction of the Administration and Education buildings at Sul Ross State University and at Centennial School for a few years before the family moved to Odessa,
He also worked at Alpine Independent School District as a custodian and bus driver for many years. Later, he was hired at Big Bend Telephone Company where he retired twice.
Juan was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Alpine.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter. Surviving are four daughters, two sons, 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.

Alpine Independent School District is hiring Child Care Leads and Child Care Assistants for their new childcare center set to open in August.
Child Care leads will serve as individuals responsible for developing a cohesive teaching team, effectively leading childcare assistants.
The assistants will serve as an individual responsible for assisting the lead teacher and helping throughout the center as needed.
Individuals must have a strong understanding of children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development for both positions.
Applicants must be 18 years or older, have a high school diploma or equivalent education and meet the requirements regarding a background check.

Big Bend Community Action Committee is in a state of disarray after the termination of its executive director and financial officer.
The Big Bend Sentinel reports this week that the nonprofit devoted to providing economic assistance to low-income residents failed to file mandatory fiscal audits dating back to 2019.
Presidio County Judge Joe Portillo was appointed interim chairman on a motion by Brewster County Judge Greg Henington.
Portillo was quoted as urging the community to get together and, in his words, “salvage what we have.”
The group meeting two weeks ago also named Big Bend Regional Hospital District J.D. Newsom as interim Executive Director.
Newsom said the district is in a crisis but it is a great opportunity to fix a lot of issues and it could come out of it stronger.
The Alpine Parks and Recreation Board is seeking input from the community through a Parks Usage and Improvement survey.
Feedback from the survey will be used to plan, prioritize and improve parks in Alpine.
Survey results will be discussed at the Parks and Recreation Board meeting at 5:30 June 14 at City Council Chambers at 803 W. Holland Avenue.

Responses to the survey are due at 5 p.m. Friday, June 2.

El Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine está contratando líderes de cuidado infantil y asistentes de cuidado infantil para su nuevo centro de cuidado infantil que abrirá en agosto.
Los líderes de cuidado infantil servirán como individuos responsables de desarrollar un equipo de enseñanza cohesivo, liderando efectivamente a los asistentes de cuidado infantil.
Los asistentes servirán como una persona responsable de ayudar al maestro principal y ayudar en todo el centro según sea necesario.
Las personas deben tener una sólida comprensión del desarrollo cognitivo, social, emocional y físico de los niños para ambos puestos.
