Good evening, today is Wednesday, May 18th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The swimming pool at Kokernot Park should open for the summer on Memorial Day weekend, the Alpine City Council heard Tuesday.
Acting City Manager Megan Antrim said that 18 lifeguards have been hired, more than in many years past, and she hopes the pool can remain open all summer.
Lifeguard shortages in some years have required closing the pool early.
It was the first meeting for new Mayor Catherine Eaves, who was elected earlier this month. She was sworn in along with Councilors Chris Rodriguez and Martin Sandate.
They were re-elected but without an election because they were unopposed.
After being sworn in, Eaves presented a plaque to outgoing Mayor Andy Ramos for his three two-year terms in office.
He was limited to the three terms by the City Charter and could not run for re-election.
Antrim said the lack of rain in the area can be expected to cause some water shortages and the city is asking businesses with normally high usage to cut back.
She said they don’t want to restrict lawn watering but they are asking residents to be cautious so restrictions won’t be needed.
In spite of about half an inch of rain last week, Alpine remains in the extreme to exceptional drought area.
In her report to the council, she said an open house for upgrades to the Visitor Center, now completed, will be scheduled after center manager Heather Yadon returns from maternity leave.
Antrim praised the 80-thouand-dollar upgrade, financed by Hotel Occupancy Taxes, and work to upgrade the old school, formerly used for the Sunshine House, for city office use.
She also said the Police Department has hired the first police dog in many years.
And she said staff has started training on enforcement of the now year-old Dark Sky ordinance and still is looking for a location for a Dark Sky Park.
Parks Board Chairman Darin Nancy said Nopalito is probably the darkest of the city’s parks but the sky is only visible looking straight up.
He said a dark sky park should have a 360-degree view of the heavens.
There will be a car accident at 9:30 Thursday morning on Fightin’ Buck Avenue by the Alpine High School.
We know in advance because the Alpine School District plans a mock car accident there to raise awareness and ramp up prevention efforts.
Local law enforcement and E.M.S. will be on the scene to help assist and make this scene realistic.
Students will tell stories involving their peers to immerse them in the accident scenario as best as possible.
In a Facebook Post, the district said they hope that the students will be made aware of the dangers of substance abuse and the consequences of intoxicated driving.

The Marathon Chamber of Commerce is looking for vendors to sell unique, family-friendly goods at the first ever New Moon Festival on Saturday, May 28.
From 2 p.m. until dusk, vendors will be present with food, drinks and more with a star party after dark.
Music will be offered at 6 p.m. and beer, wine and appetizers will be available for purchase featuring Chateau Wright wines, catered by the French Company Grocer.
Dr. Vincent Hue will host a presentation on the James Webb Telescope as the night’s guest speaker starting at 7 p.m.
Telescopes also will be available for guests to view stars under some of the darkest skies in the United States.

La piscina en el parque Kokernot debería abrir para el verano el fin de semana del Día de los Caídos, escuchó el Ayuntamiento de Alpine el martes.
La administradora interina de la ciudad, Megan Antrim, dijo que se han contratado 18 salvavidas, más que en muchos años anteriores, y espera que la piscina pueda permanecer abierta todo el verano.

Los estudiantes contarán historias que involucren a sus compañeros para sumergirlos en el escenario del accidente lo mejor posible.
En una publicación de Facebook, el distrito dijo que espera que los estudiantes sean conscientes de los peligros del abuso de sustancias y las consecuencias de conducir ebrio.
