Good evening, today is Wednesday, May 17th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Alpine City Council Tuesday approved the interlocal agreement creating the Alpine Emergency Services Board to manage the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department.
Brewster County approved it earlier after County Judge Greg Henington created it to allow for better management by the department that serves Alpine and northern Brewster County.
The council postponed action last week when Councilor Chris Rodriguez suggested the contract did not clearly say the council had to act on any dollar amount the city would contribute.
Also approved Tuesday was a grant application to TxDOT to fund a Mobility Plan to benefit the overall safety and connectivity of the community.
The application notes students walk or bike to area school and college campuses and residents need to have safe pedestrian crossings.
The meeting started with a canvass approving the May 6 City Election and swearing in Judy Stokes in Ward 1, Darin Nance in Ward 3 and Rick Stephens in Ward 5.
Alpine brought in two first-time-winning awards and four small market awards in the 2023 Texas Travel Awards, getting two awards for the third year in row.
Viva Big Bend won best music festival in a small market and the Museum of Big Bend won best museum in a small market.
For the first time, Alpine earned the best community event in a small market for the Alpine Christmas Stroll.
And the Spirits of the West Wine and Beef Fest won best food festival in a small market for the first time.
The Texas Travel Awards recognize and celebrate top travel destinations and attractions across Texas, highlighting the places, businesses and things to do.
The awards program is sponsored by the publishers of Austin Monthly, San Antonio Magazine and Texas Music.
The Big Bend Arts Council will offer training for budding artists on a variety of primitive firing techniques in the scenic Davis Mountains next month.
Dr. Jennifer Miller-Ray, assistant professor of Education at Sul Ross State University, is the winner of the Outstanding Teacher of the year award.
The winner is chosen by a faculty selection committee that includes student representation.
It was chaired by Dr. Laura Payne, the dean of the Jimmy D. Case College of Literature, Arts and Social Sciences.
Dr. Miller-Ray joined the faculty of the Department of Education in 2020.
She earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Texas and graduate and undergraduate degrees from Tarleton State University.
Dr. Miller-Ray will be awarded her plaque at the Faculty Awards ceremony next fall.
As the award winner, she will also be forwarded as a nominee for the Texas State University System Board of Regents’ Teaching Award and the Minnie Piper Stevens Teaching Award.

The 16th Big Bend Big Fix Spay and Neuter Clinic will be in Marathon Saturday and Sunday for pet owners from the Big Bend and Trans Pecos Regions.
For $129 per pet, owners can receive spay or neuter surgery plus basic and rabies vaccines.
Wellness exams for $25 include annual and rabies vaccines. Microchips and Flea and Tick Treatments are available at $10 each.
The Big Bend Big Fix is hosted by the Far West Texas Rescue Coalition and the veterinary team from Animal Balance, funded in part by a grant from the Permian Basin Area Foundation.

El Ayuntamiento de Alpine aprobó el martes el acuerdo interlocal que crea la Junta de Servicios de Emergencia de Alpine para administrar el Departamento de Bomberos Voluntarios de Alpine.
El condado de Brewster lo aprobó después de que el juez del condado Greg Henington lo creara para permitir una mejor gestión por parte del departamento que atiende a Alpine y al norte del condado de Brewster.
El concejo pospuso la acción la semana pasada cuando el concejal Chris Rodríguez sugirió que el contrato no decía claramente que el concejo tenía que actuar sobre cualquier monto en dólares que la ciudad contribuiría.
También se aprobó el martes una solicitud de subvención a TxDOT para financiar un Plan de Movilidad para beneficiar la seguridad y conectividad general de la comunidad.
La solicitud señala que los estudiantes caminan o van en bicicleta a los campus escolares y universitarios del área y que los residentes deben tener cruces peatonales seguros.
La reunión comenzó con un escrutinio que aprobó las Elecciones Municipales del 6 de mayo y juramentó a Judy Stokes en el Distrito 1, Darin Nance en el Distrito 3 y Rick Stephens en el Distrito 5.
