Good evening, today is Tuesday, May 16th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Alpine City Council will officially canvass the May 6 City Election Tuesday evening and, if approved, swear in the successful candidates.
The Alpine School Board has voted to hire Chris Valenzuela as the new chief financial officer, replacing Clay Braden, who has resigned.
Valenzuela is an Alpine High School graduate and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart said it was, in her words, “great to get one of our own” for the new position.
The new C.F.O. is a graduate of Texas Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in mathematics.
Valenzuela has taught engineering, robotics and design at the high school and Dr. Rinehart said Braden will help him learn his new job.
She said she is excited to get him and expects him to get up to speed quickly.
The Hal Flanders Recycling Center will offer free scrap tire recycling days for the next three months with the first coming May 26 and 27 at the recycling center.
The next days will be June 16 and 17 and July 28 and 29. Residential tires will be recycled from either 9 to 4 or until the container is full. No commercial tires will be accepted.
The Rio Grande Council of Governments awarded all of the city’s request of $6,233 to the city’s Municipal Solid Waste program to fund the event.
Discussion at a recent City Council meeting was about old tires that have been piling up around the city.

The Big Bend Arts Council will offer training for budding artists on a variety of primitive firing techniques in the scenic Davis Mountains next month.
It will be at the Old Spanish Trail Gallery on the Scenic Loop, 14 miles from Fort Davis at the Old Spanish Trail Gallery adjacent to the Crow’s Nest Campground.
Participants will use a variety of materials to develop unique surface texture, designs and coloration followed by firing the pieces with alternate outdoor methods.
Firing methods include pit, barrel and saggar fires, which are similar to kilns.
Participants will spend the full day on Saturday preparing and firing clay pieces and then return on Sunday morning to clean and take home the finished works.
The class will be from 9 to 5 June 17 and 9 to 11 June 18 and cost $125. Lodging is to be arranged by the participants.

Visit Marathon announced the 16th Annual Full Moon Festival with a kick-off of the chili cook-off June 30 continuing with a dance July 1 and 2 at the Marathon Motel.
The festival will include a dance with Craig Carter and the Spur of the Moment Band with an entry fee of ten dollars to dance. The festival itself is free to the public.
The Full Moon Festival will raise funds for the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and the Marathon Parent Teacher Organization.
Marfa High School’s One-Act Troupe will present its play named “After Hours” at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Crowley Theatre.
The community performance is open to all community members with an admission cost of one canned food item which will be donated to the local food pantry.
The class also will present a viewing of Aubrie Aguilar’s U.I.L. video “Unrequited Love?” which placed fourth in the state completion.
