May 16th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Monday, May 16th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

Monday was the first day of early voting for the March 1 Primary Runoff election set for Tuesday next week.

Already one candidate has made an appearance in Alpine.

Dr. Dawn Buckingham is running against Tim Westley for the Republican nomination for Texas Land Commissioner and met supporters and news media at the Spicewood Café Monday.

The Land Commissioner oversees three-point five million acres, much of it on oil-producing land and most of it in West Texas.

She blamed cuts in oil and gas production with a major role in the current inflation in the country and said at the present rate, we soon could see $10 gasoline.

Buckingham also discussed the crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border and Texas’ efforts to try to stem some of the tide of migrants, saying the Democrats have abdicated their responsibility.

She also defended the state’s voting system, saying it does not allow vote harvesting. Legal voting makes for a stable society, she said.

Big Bend Telephone has announced that 100-percent of Presidio customers will have fiber connectivity by the end of the year.

B.B.T. has invested over three-and-a-half million dollars to the area so that high-speed internet will be possible for every resident.

B.B.T. General Manager Rusty Moore said that while B.B.T. continues to invest in many local areas,  with Presidio a port of entry, it marks a significant milestone.

Moore: “We have been targeting Presidio in sections as we build it out and build it out and we’ve done this over a number of years and we’re finally reaching the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Currently the entire investment is being done without grants but Moore said they’re working on that area to bring even more innovation.

Moore: “We have found out that we are pretty good grant writers. Now what we would like to be is successful grant writers, and currently that’s been a bit elusive. Some of that money has been going into the fringes of metropolitan areas and we’re trying to bring that into this region.”

Presidio will join areas like Comstock, Sanderson, Sheffield and more who have 100 percent fiber internet connections.

The City of Alpine announced Monday it began accepting Hotel Occupancy Tax Grant applications Monday for the 2022-23 fiscal year. Deadline is Friday, July 1.

The grants can support events or other projects geared towards bringing visitors to Alpine for overnight stays.

The legal use of the funds have some very explicit limitations.

They allow uses including advertising outside of the area, Promotion of the Arts, Historical Restoration and Preservation and Sporting Events.

To explain the program, a workshop has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, in the Alpine City Council Chambers.

For those unable to attend in person, the workshop will broadcast on Zoom. The Zoom log-in details can be found on the city website at cityofalpine.com.

Law enforcement agencies in Presidio are investigating the burglary of a local residence near Presidio High School over the weekend.

The owner found a window open upon returning from out of town and determined someone had broken in and several items were taken from the home.

While officers were on scene, the U.S. Border Patrol detained an undocumented individual with some items that were confirmed as belonging to the resident.

The 31-year-old Luis Carlos Hernandez had several prior charges on his record for crimes committed in the U.S.

He now faces additional charges of Burglary of a Habitation, a second-degree felony, by the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
