A celebration of life will be announced later for Robert “Bob or Bobby” Lewis Dawson, who died May 1 in Terlingua.
He was born on April 24, 1956, in Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Army near the end of the Vietnam war and spent much of his military career in Germany. Robert went on to become a mechanic and ventured in programming, rock hunting and art, especially drawing.
He was predeceased by a stepson. Surviving are his wife Lynnette, his mother, two brothers and a sister.
The new Alpine City Council officially came into being Tuesday with County Judge Greg Henington swearing in the newly elected and re-elected members.
The new council consists of Mayor Catherine Eaves and five councilors. They are Reagan Stone in Ward One, Eva Olivas in Ward Two, Darin Nance in Ward Three, Lucy Escovedo returning to Ward four and Rick Stephens in Ward Five. Stone replaces Judy Stokes who asked to be relieved in the middle of her second term. Olivas replaces Chris Rodriguez who did not run. Escovedo replaces Martin Sandate who did not run.
Nance and Stephens were not up this year, which is the middle of their present terms.
Sul Ross State University’s La Frontera Research Initiative for STEM has been awarded almost 150 thousand dollars to support education students in rural border communities.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The grant from the National Science Foundation is for “Creating and Sustaining Noyce Mentors en la Frontera.”
It is aimed at serving the national need to build greater understanding of what it means to be an effective STEM teacher serving rural, high-need schools. It is specifically intended for schools on the Texas-Mexico border and on students from groups which are historically underrepresented in STEM fields. The Sul Ross initiative is charged with conducting education research and implementation of best teaching and learning practices to improve STEM literacy.
The grant will establish partnerships with Midland College and schools in Eagle Pass, Del Rio, Midland and in rural Southwest Texas communities, and with the Science Mill Museum. It also seeks to strengthen relationships with existing partners like Southwest Texas Junior College and in high-need schools in Presidio, Marfa, Alpine and Uvalde. Each participating STEM teacher will also have an opportunity to practice skills developed through the institute.

The City of Alpine has announced that utility disconnections will be May 29 for non-payment of current bills. Past-due accounts will be disconnected if prior arrangements have not been made and a fee of 35 dollars each will be assessed for both the disconnect and the reconnect.
To avoid the inconvenience of utility disconnects and the fees, payments must be made by 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 28. Payments can be left in the drop box outside City Hall, in-person inside the office or on-line by registering at cityofalpine.com.
Summer Reading is coming soon at the Alpine Public Library.

Nació el 24 de abril de 1956 en Pensilvania. Se alistó en el ejército cerca del final de la guerra de Vietnam y pasó gran parte de su carrera militar en Alemania.
Robert se convirtió en mecánico y incursionó en la programación, la búsqueda de rocas y el arte, especialmente dibujo.
Falleció antes que un hijastro. Le sobreviven su esposa Lynnette, su madre, dos hermanos y una hermana.
El nuevo Ayuntamiento de Alpine entró en vigor oficialmente el martes cuando el juez del condado Greg Henington tomó juramento a los miembros recién elegidos y reelegidos.
El nuevo consejo está formado por la alcaldesa Catherine Eaves y cinco concejales. STEM significa ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas. La subvención de la Fundación Nacional de Ciencias es para “Crear y sostener mentores de Noyce en la Frontera.”
Su objetivo es satisfacer la necesidad nacional de lograr una mayor comprensión de lo que significa ser un maestro STEM eficaz que presta servicios en escuelas rurales de alta necesidad. Está destinado específicamente a escuelas en la frontera Texas-México y a estudiantes de grupos que históricamente están subrepresentados en los campos STEM. La iniciativa Sul Ross se encarga de realizar investigaciones educativas e implementar mejores prácticas de enseñanza y aprendizaje para mejorar la alfabetización STEM. La subvención establecerá asociaciones con Midland College y escuelas en Eagle Pass, Del Rio,
Midland y en comunidades rurales del suroeste de Texas, y con el Science Mill Museum. La Ciudad de Alpine ha anunciado que las desconexiones de servicios públicos serán el 29 de mayo por falta de pago de facturas actuales.
Las cuentas vencidas se desconectarán si no se han hecho arreglos previos y se cobrará una tarifa de 35 dólares cada una tanto por la desconexión como por la reconexión.
