At commissioner’s court today (TUESDAY), county officials heard a proposal to replace the courthouse gazebo with a new structure.
The local group Ladies of the Lawn, which helps with the courthouse grounds, proposed bringing down the current gazebo and building a new one closer to the sidewalk.

MOODY1: “We think it would be a good idea to have a new gazebo at some point that is ADA accessible, not rotting and that opens up the lawn a little bit more.” (0:10)
Commissioners approved of moving forward with the effort – county officials will start by asking for bids to tear down the structure.

Also during today’s (TUESDAY’S) commissioner’s court, city council member Rick Stephens gave commissioners an update on the city of Alpine’s water crisis.
Stephens said the city is going forward with drilling a new well and installing a new pump to replace Roberts #3, the municipal well that fell into disrepair earlier this month (MAY). The new well will be dug deeper than Roberts #3.
STEPHENS1: And as part of that, we’re increasing capacity for what Roberts could put out before at 300 gallons per minute up to 500 gallons per minute. We know that will help a lot and not have us to run the pump all the time.” (0:14)
According to Stephens, to help ease the problem while the new well is dug, the city is hauling water from the airport to the west side of town, using two 6,000-gallon tankers.
At the next city council meeting, council will discuss if and when the city will fill the pool for the upcoming swimming season.

Tomorrow (WEDNESDAY), Leadership Big Bend will host a volunteer event at Sul Ross.
The volunteer event will give the tri-county area an opportunity to connect with and get involved in different nonprofit groups across the region. You’ll learn about all the ways you can volunteer and support your community.
The volunteer event will be May 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the University Center on the campus of Sul Ross.

Big Bend National Park has three internship openings that start soon (JUNE). The work ranges from administrative and maintenance related to interpretation and education.
The administrative support assistant intern will provide clerical support for staff at Big Bend National Park headquarters. The intern working in interpretation and education will have an opportunity to train in supporting, creating, and presenting interpretation programs. And the intern working in the maintenance and facilities department will assist in performing routine and straightforward maintenance and repair of the park grounds, structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.
All three internship roles come with a living stipend and some money to help cover relocation costs.

Agave Festival Marfa returns later this spring.
The annual festival is a celebration of the agave and its influence on culture through food, film, music, science and spirits. Each year, the fest brings people from all across the region and beyond to come together for free and accessible programming, including talks by authors, historians, botanists, artists, anthropologists and archaeologists.
The festival will be June 4 through June 7.

Hoy (martes), durante la sesión de la Junta de Comisionados, los funcionarios del condado escucharon una propuesta para reemplazar el quiosco de la sede judicial por una nueva estructura.
El grupo local *Ladies of the Lawn*, que colabora en el mantenimiento de los jardines del edificio judicial, propuso derribar el quiosco actual y construir uno nuevo más cerca de la acera.

Asimismo, durante la sesión de la Corte de Comisionados celebrada hoy (MARTES), el concejal Rick Stephens presentó a los comisionados una actualización sobre la crisis hídrica de la ciudad de Alpine.
Stephens informó que la ciudad avanza con la perforación de un nuevo pozo y la instalación de una nueva bomba para reemplazar a Roberts #3, el pozo municipal que quedó fuera de servicio a principios de este mes (MAYO). El nuevo pozo se excavará a mayor profundidad que el Roberts #3.
menciono: « como parte de este proceso, estamos aumentando la capacidad de suministro: pasaremos de los 300 galones por minuto que podía producir el pozo Roberts anteriormente, a 500 galones por minuto. Sabemos que esto será de gran ayuda y evitará que tengamos que mantener la bomba en funcionamiento de manera ininterrumpida».
Según Stephens, para contribuir a mitigar el problema mientras se lleva a cabo la perforación del nuevo pozo, la ciudad está transportando agua desde el aeropuerto hacia el lado oeste de la localidad, utilizando dos camiones cisterna con capacidad para 6.000 galones cada uno.
En la próxima sesión del Concejo Municipal, los concejales debatirán si se llenará la piscina de la ciudad —y, de ser así, cuándo se hará— de cara a la próxima temporada de natación.

El Parque Nacional Big Bend tiene tres vacantes para pasantías que comenzarán pronto (en JUNIO). Las labores abarcan desde tareas administrativas y de mantenimiento hasta actividades relacionadas con la interpretación y la educación.
El pasante asistente de apoyo administrativo brindará soporte de oficina al personal en la sede central del Parque Nacional Big Bend. El pasante del área de interpretación y educación tendrá la oportunidad de capacitarse en el apoyo, la creación y la presentación de programas de interpretación. Por su parte, el pasante del departamento de mantenimiento e instalaciones asistirá en la realización de tareas rutinarias y sencillas de mantenimiento y reparación de los terrenos, estructuras, edificios, equipos y servicios públicos relacionados del parque.
Las tres pasantías incluyen un estipendio para gastos de manutención, así como una ayuda económica para cubrir parte de los costos de reubicación.

El Agave Festival Marfa regresa a finales de esta primavera.
Este festival anual es una celebración del agave y de su influencia en la cultura a través de la gastronomía, el cine, la música, la ciencia y las bebidas espirituosas. Cada año, el festival reúne a personas de toda la región —y de más allá— en torno a una programación gratuita y accesible, que incluye charlas a cargo de autores, historiadores, botánicos, artistas, antropólogos y arqueólogos.
El festival se celebrará del 4 al 7 de junio.
